At that mileage and price (oof!), what might satisfactorily account for the issues under the rear deck?

aside from the engine bay questions, if the car is as described, what is it worth in today's market? i may need to adjest the value on mine.
my annual insurance renewal is coming up. State Farm sends me a form annually to fill out so they can keep track of the mileage, condition and value. i currently have my 79 w/ an agreed on replacement value at $42k ($1k deductable so $41k). it has 40k miles, excellent paint (original except cosmetic repsray on the driver's door), stock except for exhaust, k27, and 964 cams. overall excellent shape. petrol blue w/cork int, sport seats, LSD, and SR. any thoughts on the TRUE value? ![]()

If a "mechanic" has caused that damage, I'd expect his service/repair quality to be proportionally reflected. Sloan typically has nice cars that are frequently over-priced. This car appears to be suspect. Anyone who lays down P-car money (especially Sloan P-car money) should see the thing in person, judge for themselves and be completely satisfied with all aspects of the purchase before moving forward.
Several here have been creamed on a car purchase in the past, myself included. If a fella can help someone avoid the same by pointing out concerns, it seems like a reasonable thing to do. As always YMMV. |

Pavulon, you may be a "glass half empty" guy and I may be a "glass half full" guy. If you have ever changed a fanbelt or removed the fan/alternator assembly, you know how tight a workspace it is. An emergency roadside repair of a fanbelt using the factory tool kit has a high probability of busted knuckles and "wrench rash" to the painted surfaces under the deck lid.
If the car presents an overall condition consistent with the odometer mileage, then I wouldn't be overly concerned that wrench scratches under the deck lid are indicative of some serious deficiency in maintenance. Maybe a less experienced or DIY mechanic...ok. Or maybe some emergency service required by non p-car specialists. In either case, for a 29k mile car, the repair work is likely limited to fairly non-invasive surgery. For a 29k car of this age, I'd expect that the alternator may have been replaced, intercooler seals, fan belt, spark plugs, cap and rotor. It's when there has been head work, cylinder head studs replaced (I believe this car came with Dilavar studs, so this should be checked), engine case split, etc. that you need to really worry about who did the work. And guess what? Even if a celebrated p car mechanic who is regularly mentioned in Excellence magazine did the work, you may still wind up with an expensive basket case on your hands. Such is life in dealing with 30 year old cars. Anyone who isn't prepared to accept this possibility should head to the dealer and buy a brand new car with a warranty. As to the question of value of this car, that is of course highly subjective. It looks pretty nice overall, but photos can hide many flaws. I'd need to evaluate in person for that kind of money. I don't see myself ever shopping in this end of the market anyway. I've tasted the fruit of the modified 930 and would rather buy a modded car for less money that can be driven without guilt. For the right buyer, looking for a specific color/year, etc., this car may be just what the doctor ordered. Probably was a doctor who ordered the car originally In 1978 ![]() In any case, different strokes for different folks, YMMV, Caveat Emptor. Enjoy the ride.

wow...do you work for Sloan or in customer financing at some other car dealership?
and honestly, I'm closer to a "are you gonna drink the rest of that?" sort. Last edited by pavulon; 11-24-2012 at 06:52 AM.. |

I simply find it amusing what people will get hung up on. Don't think the car is worth 68k? The solution is simple...don't buy it. Don't think a 29k mile car can have some scratches under the deck lid? I'm guessing you haven't spent much time putting wrenches on one. Think that no scratches under the deck lid indicates a "good" mechanic? Perhaps, but in reality I am afraid it's much more complicated than that. Should a 68k 930 be absolutely flawless? Perhaps, but again it's more complicated than that. We all know that value can only be determined when cash changes hands between buyer and seller, everything else is pissing in the wind. All I am saying is I wouldn't dismiss the entire car as a sham just because of some scratches under the deck lid. YMMV.

All right...I'm done. The images, mileage, and price speak for themselves. MacGyver says no biggie. If someone ever takes the leap to go look at it, please report back.

I just got the PCA evaluation on my 76 930 today and I was surprised how low the evaluation was. It was apparently based on 34 cars but I doubt that 34 76 930's changed hands in the last 19 months.

Engine tells the story. Not a rockchip to be found could be respray and even if it was glass out repaint still changes value Also patina on the seats indicate possible dye job or recover when the engine does not match condition wise. The statement about the binder full of records should say FULL service history if I am to believe the mileage to be correct. Lots of plays on words sometimes when looking at potential low milers especially when they are too old to CarFax.
Not glass half empty just due dilligence before laying down that kind of money. |

Car screams repaint to me, and begs the obvious question about why such a low-mileage example would require a full repaint. A large portion of the premium one might rightfully expect for a true low-mileage original car would be negated if this is the case.

I was much happier with the evaluation on my 77 track car than one the Turbo Carerra. I think the issue with the early turbo is that the ads went back 19 months and these cas have started rapid appreciation over the last 12 months or so.

Have to give Sloan cars credit for advertising it "as received " in the engine bay. They must believe the miles with good documentation, with the in your face photos, otherwise it would be easy to clean it up and repair the paint. Being a long time rare Porsche dealer I.m sure they know how to make those issues go away. I give them credit for being an honest broker to pass it along the way it was received. Maybe the price is a little high but a rare car as 78 was the least US produced (461) and as a rare color may not be a favorite to many but for a few may be the best. If a more standard color I think it would be really asking too much.

I wonder if they are aware that exceptional 76 turbos have recently broken into the 6 figures elsewhere in the world.

The engine bay looks pretty beat up. Whats going on with the rusted pulleys? The retaining lugs look worn, Why? What went on here?
