Hey all you porsche gurus!
Curious to know what you thought of this ad. Fair, preposterous, a steal? 1970 Porsche 930 Coupe | classic cars | City of Toronto | Kijiji I'm not a radical purist but I've always wanted a 930. I'm only 20 and feel this is the only way I can realistically get into the 930 game. I feel swapping an engine into another porsche would already put me close to 16k. I'm really looking for the pure driving experience of a 930 and a project I can work away at for years to come. Does this seem like a good way to achieve my goals? Anything to watch out for? I'm going to try to get off work to see it this coming Sunday. Thanks so much for your time! I've been lurking on these forums for way too long but never really had a chance to get a 930 here in Canada. I currently have a bmw e30 convertible I've brought up to spec to say the least. Can't wait to hear the verdict! Geoff |

Although philosophically I hate rebodied cars, this one looks to be significantly better than most that are for sale. A large percentage of these are fright pigs -- half-assed conversions done in the eighties with bad body work, poor interiors, etc. Not a fan of the wheels, but other than that it looked surprisingly well sorted for $16k.
Once you get past the fact this was once a 1970 longhood, and is now a frankenstein -- it looks to me like it could be a very good deal -- if it checks out. Are the flares steel or fiberglass? They went through the trouble of installing Turbo gauges when they did the motor, and it appears pretty well put together from the pictures. The big thing I would worry about is rust due to it being built on an ungalvanized early car. If the rebody was not prepped well, or if the existing rust was not addressed when it was modified, there could be some serious horror hidden on the car. Especially under those rockers. How thorough was the conversion? Has the suspension been upgraded to cope with the power increase? What does the wiring look like? There are certainly some cautions -- conversions like this are not easy to sell (hence the price). But $16k is almost parts car money if the Turbo motor is strong. So there is not THAT much downside risk. If not rusty, I'd say it is a lot of car for $16k, and if you don't mind the outlaw nature, take it in for a PPI and pull the trigger.

I hate it - and you will too if you buy it.
Get an original car, 912E, 944 or even an SC.....once you have saved up a little bit more. Good luck. |

Seems to be a deposit down on the car as of 6/10. Thank God. Not a car for a 20 year old!

I'm not one to denigrate youth, but unless the OP has grown up working in a garage, and has access to a lot of money, this is a car that will put a young person in way over his head on a number of levels: - maintenance difficulties - expenses - driving dynamics If it doesn't run well and needs significant work (which I think you should assume) -- it is a huge commitment. If it does run well, it is a car that might very well conspire to kill a less experienced driver. A Boxster, a 968/944, or even a well sorted 914 is a much better first Porsche at the $16k & under price point.

Much more succinct than my take.
![]() Sold in less than a day = underpriced. What does a running, stock turbo motor go for? $10-12k+? I couldn't find any on the marketplace in the last year except for a couple of built up versions.

I personally thought it was a hoax. Could be wrong of course. Emailed right away and got an email response some time later and was told to leave a message. Then quite a bit later the guy told me his phone dropped into the water while fishing and haven't heard back since. Truthfully it was a little strange.

Hey all,
Thanks for your input! I contacted the seller 9 minutes after the ad went up but by the next day someone had already dropped a deposit on it. I'm next in what sounds to be a very very long line. Yes, I did indeed just turn 20 but I'm not a stranger to classic cars. I currently drive a bmw e30 convertible I've given new life and my dad been restoring trucks all his life. I'm from a farm so in the winter my dad spends all his time in our well equipped shop. I'm in university for agricultural sciences but for the summer I work as a sprayer operator currently (7 days a week and near 20 hour days which is why I couldn't make it out right away!) so I have some mechanical inclination. I also have a winter car so I can keep the salt off my other vehicles. Looks like it might be best to save a couple more years and buy a more original 930, the skyrocketing prices make it seem like they may be out of reach though in a couple year. That being said the idea of a frankenstein car has always scared me in terms of handling and I imagine the notorious turbo would only accentuate the issue. I've never been one to thrash cars (my bmw is running great with 380k kms) but I would like the piece of mind knowing I'm on a solid platform. Thanks again for all your opinions! Really means a lot to me ![]() |

A couple of years from now, when you have a nice 911 or 930 in the garage, you will praise the coincidences and good fortune which conspired to keep that car away from you.
I cannot remember seeing any nice body converted 911 EVER!!! ...and especially not one that was for sale at any reasonable price. I think it is pretty safe to assume they are all crap and not worth the money. A lot of sub standard work "as in unbelievably hamfisted abuse" has been carried out on 911Žs (especially in the US) back when they were relatively cheap cars

Thanks for the kind words
![]() I really am a believer in the old saying "everything happens for a reason" and I think this is the same. I've been saving for a while and wanted to spend half my car fund on the car itself and have the other half reserved for unforeseen issues. I feel like any extra dollar spent on a conversion like this will have next to no marginal benefit in the long run; so for now I'll save for the real deal. Maybe a nice graduation gift for myself in a couple years ![]() This has been a great eye-opener though and I plan to be more active on the forums and really start doing my research and pinpointing what I want rather than wait for shady "too good to be true" back doors. It's a great community you have here, can't wait to start being more active in it ![]() Thanks again! |

I think youŽll be much better off, if you spend most of that money buying a better car..... instead of putting half the money aside for repairs. A well maintained and sorted 911 is actually quite friendly to your finances and will most likely drive lots and lots of miles and require nothing more than basic maintainance like oil, plugs, cleaning......just regular care and love. Just keep looking (and test driving) and report back if you have questions or want oppinions. Good luck ![]()

I have heard my share of fish stories, but this isn't one of them. The gentleman was out fishing with his son and got his phone wet. Honest guy honoured our deal even though the pond scum from kijiji offered more money. The previous owner purchased in 04 and put less that 2000 miles. Fresh top end rebuild, steel flares, recaro seats power windows, after market sway bars. 70T rust free body a lift was available to inspect the underside.
915 transmission. Not sure what direction I'm going to go but looks like fun. Picking up my new 89 930 today so I can compare against the real McCoy!! Keep you updated. |
