1980 SC Ducktail > Keep or return to stock?
Just bought a 1980 SC with only 68,000 miles and its a California car. The previous owner had a ducktail installed. Other than this, it's a prestige example of an unaltered 911. Keep or return to original? That is the question. Opinions welcomed!

Chances of a perfect paint match are slim. You may want to just find a lid and get it matched as well as possible and put it on the shelf. It's good to have options.

68k original miles and almost all original. Get rid of the RS ducktail decklid which is belongs on a 70's longhood, and make it all original.
Plenty of people will be interested in buying the ducktail to make a RS replica, and the sale should pay for most or all of the original decklid and repaint. Last edited by blau911; 11-27-2014 at 12:05 PM.. |

It's your car now, do what you like! If you like the ducktail leave it on. If you like the original, run it with that. Personally I'm partial to ducktails.
Now if you're selling the car (which you aren't, riiiiight?), returning it to original will bring the maximum $$. Since you have the original decklid you can always do that if you decide to sell. Congrats on the purchase and enjoy your new car. d.

I wasn't planning on getting this car as I've just started a project building an SC for SCCA/PCA. It just came up and was too nice of a car to pass up. Ducktail may go on the race car

You want something with more down force than a duck tail on your race car. It looks great on the SC.

Keep the original lid AND the ducktail to sell with your car (if you ever do).
You put the lid you want on the car now, and let the future buyer decide what they want on the car. This is a great selling point. If the buyer doesn't want it, or negotiations get too low- then you can always sell the tail separately. Switching lids (especially between two that are painted and FIT) is an easy reversible project. My 78' ppo (previous previous owner) did the car as a " carrera look"- carrera stickers, tail, etc. The PO wanted a more original look so he went back to a stock lid- but he kept the decals?!?-too scared to pull them off. He sold the duck. As a buyer, I really wished he had of kept the ducktail, for I kind of want to play around with one (I kind of like the fun of the carrera look thing- and also appreciate stock- but the PO's decision has left the car somewhere "inbetween" but I don't have the time right now to go through the trouble of buying/fitting/and painting a new duck, or removing the decals for that matter) Anybody have a good white duck? I just removed the decals from my car. They'd been on since a repaint about 32 years ago, and as expected a ghost image was visible due to the rest of the paint having a "suntan". I ended up color sanding the whole car and that worked to removed the ghost image. A little scary to take sandpaper to your car though.
As far as the duck or not for the OP, I prefer the clean look on the SCs of the original lid. I'd say change it out and see if you like it better stock. It's easy enough to go back and forth. When you go to sell it put whatever lid on that will make it sell faster/higher. Right now that would be the original lid, but tastes can change over time.

Early 74s came with them, and the 74 IROCs ![]() ![]() As others have pointed out, it is an easy swap, and you have both lids, so enjoy whatever style fits your mood, I love the Duck look on my SC..
