Turbo variants have all the charms of naturally aspirated models plus numerous additional unique quirks that make the entire experience exponentially more hardcore...Conceptually speaking they are like a four-wheeled oven that burns money and fuel...Personally I would not touch one with ANY accident history, no matter how minor the damage or entertaining the story...They are factory performance cars that enjoy a bit of an overstated reputation for real performance, at least in stock trim...Properly beefing up motors, brakes and suspension pays big dividends by way of performance, but try to avoid falling into the trap of reinventing the wheel...If you simply must have a Porsche 930, the old saw about "buying the very best driver available at your price point" has never rung more true, as projects take on a life of their own and never materialize on time and within budget...The equation tilts in your favor if you own the right tools and have the specialized knowledge to use them correctly...Factor in the newest ones are 30-plus years old and can be outclassed on road and track by a properly equipped Cayman and the attraction begins to fade...With all that said, buy the damn thing, if only to prove me wrong...RTN/XXX/OOO

It begins to fade for who? I don't think that anyone interested in a vintage 911 Turbo would give two ****s about how it stacks up against a Cayman; two totally different types of cars that have almost nothing in common.

Like he noted in his first post in the thread, Mr. Frying Pan (aka Skillet - the OP asking about current 930 pricing) already owns a Turbo that he's done some nice mods too - aka: he's familiar with them.

No one x-shops an old turbo against anything modern model from Porsche. If an archaic design but that is what the vintage driving experience is about. If you want something that is very fast, safe comfortable you don't want one of these smelly loud nasty oil leaking POS. Folks aren't paying $300k + for speedster's because they are fast.

I'm not sure 930 owners purchased the cars with lap times in mind. For me I plan on doing track days, but of course know newer cars will be faster. It's about the driving experience and I think a 930 will deliver more than a Cayman.

That's probably true, but I believe I've seen adds of 996/997 turbo owners trying to trade up for 930's which does say something..correct me if I'm wrong

Well written and fun, Thanks!
These are passionate cars and you really captured that with what you wrote and the responses it created.

No rhyme or reason in owning these cars. Just like some guys like fat girls, others like em skinny. A turbo is a thing of beauty to me, started in my teens. I like my car with hips. Hehe. Search is still on.

Forgive me for not specifically mentioning I gleaned the fact OP already owns what seems to be a real stunner...In retrospect my well-intended post was general in the extreme, likely colored by repressed trauma from real empathy for the poor souls I used to write up for dealer service...There's nothing quite like working through the inevitable "What kind of a fool do you take me for?" that transpires when you tell an otherwise nice guy his engine has to come out to replace the spark plugs and Porsche considers the turbocharger a non-warranty "wear item"...That said, it beats telling a Dodge Omni GLHS pilot what VR-rated tires cost circa-1986...In my view they all cost too much - especially when you calculate the cost-per-mile driven - but what a rush when the boost comes on...RTN/XXX/OOO

As a buyer, time is your foe.
The globe's 930 owner's club has reached the $100,000.00 membership fee buy-in level and the basic Laws of Economics show, dictate, or declare that the fee can only rise.
930s & 965s were born scarce and the quantity of those who want to own one (or, another one) can only continue to outgrow the quantiy of 930s & 965s available because they are no longer made while fanatics continue to reproduce or grow in number. In other words, the old scientific principle of supply v. demand or, scarce commodity vs. constantly growing global population demand.

Yeah, I can't think of a single other time where something of a fixed supply went up in price and then fell back.

I absolutely love my '87 however I could do some interesting things with $100k on hand...

i'd just as soon drive an accord than a cayman, and save a lot of $ in the process. to me, they're a bland, uninspiring appliance.

a good vehicle, no doubt, but to me, viscerally and visually, about as thrilling as my g.e. top loading washer.

Your memory has faded or you were ripping people off. No engine removal required for plug change.

not sure I have seen a cayman on the planet that will not be blasted into the weeds by my 930. who the hell calls a 30 year old 930 slow? I own a few fast cars and motorcycles. I have driven a few quick machines owned by others as well. a 930 to this day...is a monster. for the purposes of this tread and any credibility...do not mention a cayman and a 930 in the same discussion. thank you.

In 1989, you could go to Brumos Porsche, and buy a brand new 930 for $59K, at the same time, a 944 Turbo would set you back $49K.

Performance difference between the two Turbos, was like a second faster to 60 for the 930, and top speed, just a few miles, again going to the 930, course for about a $1,000, you could chip & a few other upgrades to the 951, and have a FASTER Turbo.

Point is, while other cars may be faster than the 930, the 930 still, 40 years later, is in a class by itself. Now, lets all hop in our "Hot Tub" time machines and head back to buy a new 930.

Which makes 944 turbos the deal of the century - today...

Don't think that will last though.
