88 924 se
Anyone have an idea on how much I should list my car for? Bought it on a whim thinking my son might want it as he drove a 924s for a few years but he just bought a new house and is house poor. I bought it in South Carolina and drove it 860 miles home without a problem. Belt service UTD. mileage in the 60s. No documentation of exact mileage but have old service records with mileage recorded indicative of speedo change estimating total mileage. Relatively unmolested. It does have the 030 and 657 on the trunk sticker so is a true Special Edition car. Drivers bolster and top of rear seat need repair but I bought material from Werks 924 to fix them.

924s will come into their own, but who knows when. It's the most underrated Porsche of ALL time. It will smoke a 944 from the same year. My third Porsche was a 924 (1976 - yes one of the first US cars) and it was amazing car for college.
Still an acquired taste. Still takes as much (or more) maintenance as an early 911. Needs belts and needs oil-cooler o-rings. Needs a lot of cooling maintenance as the radiators were too small in my mind. With all my opinion - I believe the correct price to move it would be $3800 to $4400. But that's me. Seats wouldn't be a problem (unless you want the original material) as you can put any 944 one in there. Torque tubes always a problem, but I know people rebuild them now. I don't know if Special Edition merits any price increase at all. Look how long it took to add $100 of value to a '75 911 S when it's a Silver Anniversary. I don't know if anyone cares. I think it depends on how "SE" it is. AC? Power Steering? Sunroof? I see it has manual Windows and mirrors.
The more that seperates it from your average $1500 beater 924S the better. The seats will probably be an issue because in the pic you posted they're the only major letdown of the interior. Don't throw some other seats in because anyone who knows SEs and is paying a sharp premium for one will know to look them. I once passed on a 951S silver rose because it didn't have original seats. And apperently I was the 4th person to do that on that car. |

Compared to a regular 924S, note the single driver side non-flag mirror, crank windows, cloth interior and deleted cassette holder/armrest.
This car is the lightweight 924S....sorta like the equivalent of a 964 RS America to a 964. Added to that, all 924S came with a shorter 5th gear than the 944. That said, it's not going to be worth 2x or 3x more than a standard 924S. This is car that a 924 fan will pay more for but at the same time, they will expect a car with documented recent t-belt, roller and water pump replacement. Repair the seats with the correct material that you already have. Can't tell if that is a dent on the driver front fender. I'm assuming not and that the body is good, paint is good and no rust. Unknown mileage is a negative but common on these cars. Plastic odometer gears all fail. With everything else working on the car, I'd guess $6k with the t-belt and seat repair work done. Detail it, take a bunch of pics and put it on BaT and it'll go higher. A lot of 924/944 fans over there and I've seen some ordinary 944s selling a lot higher than elsewhere. Or sell it now as-is for $4k or less. Don't drive it until the belts are replaced.

I love the seat fabric, too bad it's tearing. I'm sure you could find an upholster who could fix it.
As for values.. if the mileage is a documented 60k and service is caught up, I'd start around 6-7k and work down. That might sound optimistic but from watching my local craigslist, we've had a few lower mileage clean 924's pop up around that price point and sell within a week or two. Of course I have no idea what the handshake price was. There are always a few sub 30k examples hanging around eBay with 15-20k asks. The driver quality i.e. higher miles, non-enthusiast owned cars seem to be around 2-3k and linger for a bit. I'll never forget my first drive in a 924S, it was a one owner 30k example and an incredibly fun car to drive. Acceleration was noticeably more brisk than a 944 of the same vintage. I remember being very surprised by the acceleration when it snapped my head back. Cool little cars, I'd love to have a nice one. Last edited by black_falcon; 06-17-2016 at 11:12 AM.. |

If you just bought it, probably the price you paid is a good guess?

OK Will get the seats repaired and continue to put a few miles on it as my summer grocery getter since I don't dare drive my 65C coupe to the store and park it in the lot.

I really enjoyed my 924S. Such a well balanced chassis. I haven't kept up on these car the last few years but this looks like a decent example. Fix the seat and it should be an easy sale.

I think there has been once for sale in Pano with a $20K asking price. I believe its still available.
Yes, they are "special" but they are also 924s. Don't know what you paid for it, but 4-6K asking is reasonable. Maybe you get more for a desperate buyer or a BAT auction (8K?). I thought I read that the cloth material is hard to come by, so fixing that bolster won't be easy. Back when I was in FEWC buyer mode I saw a couple of these cars.. most either had worn our seats or seat covers over them. They drove well but by my seat of the pants, they felt no quicker/slower than a base 944.
