Seeking Engine Pricing Advice
I am looking for a little advice on price for my motor that I am considering selling to make way for 3.6 conversion. It is the original 3.0l from my ’79SC (RoW). The engine is essentially stock, runs strong and does not leak or smoke. Never raced or tracked. I’ve done a few searches for a similar engine but found the prices all over the place…anywhere from $7.5-15K. I certainly would appreciate any input from the collective brain trust on what would be a reasonable asking price. Here are some details on the engine:
Serial # *639 2588* Approx 100K miles Complete top rebuild at 85K miles by reputable local engine builder 930 lower valve covers Hydraulic chain tensioners Pop-off valve Recently installed new injectors & seals, belts, had valves adjusted Leak down test results: 1– 98% 2- 99% 3- 98% 4- 100% 5-100% 6-100% |

8k to 10k..., in the end, what are you willing to sell it for.
Good luck Last edited by 0396; 03-24-2017 at 02:56 PM.. |

I don't know,
If you don't have to sell it don't sell it. I think money wise keep it with your car, clean it up and just hang on to it. Your 79SC (Row) original car could be worth a lot more than your project 3.6L. They stopped making your 79 back in 79, and everyone keeps cutting these cars up. The supply is drying up, but the demand is still there. My mechanic said 3 people asked him if my car was for sale and it was only in his shop for a week and a half. |

I had essentially the same motor for sale a year ago. Nobody was willing to pay $8k for it. Without documentation of a full rebuild, especially head studs, you'll be hard pressed to get what you want.
I suggest you keep it.

Thanks for your input
As bit of a purist, I did wrestle with keeping the original engine but in the end I decided to go for the conversion given the car is a high miles targa, the transmission is not original, and I plan on keeping it as a semi-daily driver. That and the prospect of having an extra 100 horses in the back "just in case" is quite appealing. |

For what its worth, I do have documentation of the top end rebuild which included replacing and upgrading all of the head studs.

Sell it. You are by far leaps and bounds over most sellers with engines with the leakdowns AND studs already done and paperwork. You should get at the upper end since you have so much documentation.
