[QUOTE=specialtyoneinc;9705003]That car sounds the business. Pretty serious engine in that beast.

Built by Dick Elverud--something of a local legend in these parts. Maybe he has a cult following driving up the numbers.

glad to see there are some z-car fans here....and some that could care less about the z.

I raced a 280z in scca nationals in the gt-2 class. I then went on to race a few imsa gtu events in a 280zx.

the z car in race prep was a 911 killer. and was seriously a great looking race car!! in gtu, there was seldom a Porsche that could run with a z car or an rx 7. to me, the 80's were great times in imsa and in gtu, the Japanese cars ruled!!!! ok...back to air cooled values...

Let's also shy away from using the term ICON on cheap throw away cars like the 240z.

ICON. What is a iconic sports car? Back in the 1970s and 1980s there were a series of posters that young boys had of truely iconic cars that hung on bedroom walls. These posters were intended to encourage these young men to keep good school marks and stay out of trouble. One day they might own one of these cars if they worked very hard and got very very lucky.

These Iconic sports cars that would have hung on bedroom walls included..

lamborghini countach
ferrari testarossa
porsche 930
de tomaso pantera
ferrari f40
ferrari 288 gto
porsche 959
bmw m1
lamborghini diablo

No where on any kids bedroom wall did you find posters of datsun 240zs.

This would have been a underachieving young man. He would not have even needed secondary education to achieve the datsun.

So let's not try to rewrite history and state falsehoods like the datsun 240z being a icon.
you forgot the 512 Boxer...just sayin.

a lot of talking and market predictions.
i always advise friends that if they try to time car mkt, it's way way more lucrative to time NASDAQ, NIKKE, NYSE. dont wast time with cars.

long hood, buy one drive the **** out of it.
my pOS 72 was parked next to singers at their party. i think the pos got more look than the singers. life is too short. work hard, drive fast, and have fun.

Agreed, don't try and time the market. It doesn't work with homes, cars nor the stock market.

That said anyone and everyone should buy on dips which we are clearly in. While no one can time the bottom, it's best to buy on the way down rather than on the way up when it is SO hard to buy great cars at great prices. There are lots of great cars at great prices and the time to act is now. Not this winter, not next summer because no one can predict when these cars turn back up. That would be a guess. The fact is prices are down and cars should be bought when prices are down on a dip.

I hear ya cluckin' big chicken!

Best served to remember these are actually (awesome) toys - made for fun. Imagine being a kid and collecting GI Joes and never playing with them. Suppose to each their own, but mine were enjoyed. I ski my skis till they simply cannot hold a binding or break. I ride my bike till the wheels come off.

Then, I get another one. Buy reasonable, and enjoy every second of it.

Sure sounds like you're recommending timing the market.

I have long wanted a Thing, a chartreuse or signal orange one.

When I was a kid my dad made up a road trip game. We called it the Porsche and VW game. Only air cooled vehicles were in the game. First one to spot and call out a car got the points. All coupes were 1 point. A bus was 2 points. A 911 cab was 3 points. Double points if it was going your direction. The holy grail car was a Thing. Only 4 point vehicle in the game.

That was while riding 3 in the front of a 79 VW Camper, in chartreuse. It was the first stick I ever drove all by myself. Well, at least legally and with an upshift to 2nd.

This thread is so far off topic, doesn't feel out of place to add a hilarious book to recommend: Gilligan's Wake.

Spoiler summary is here:

Book is damn funny. You'll never see the characters the same again.

Sorry I confused Judge Smails with Thurston Howell III. Anyway, great book. I'll let myself out...

It looks like the market may flatten out or perhaps drop in the short run for the reasons listed. But I would still say the long term trend favors prices going up. The "youngest" of the air cooled cars are 20 years old. There will never be more air cooled 911 then today. Sadly we loose cars every year to accidents, neglect etc. I can't believe how many of the mid years went back to Europe over the last decade because we ignored them. Bottom line, if you find one you like and you have budgeted for maintenance/upkeep, get it and enjoy driving it. Don't worry about it's value. I've owned mine for 22 years and have no intention of ever selling it, so I only care about the value when it's time to renew the insurance. Anyway, that's my take... they're cars not investments; meant to be driven and enjoyed!
