The longhood dilemma
Hi all. I've not been exactly a prolific poster, but I've been a member for quite a while, and enjoyed reading and finding some great info out on the site.
About a year ago, I had just about finished my second 912 Resto and just had the rear parcel shelf to weld in to finish the bodywork... but it sat there and sat there and in the end I thought 'rats to it, that thing has to go.' Not really having followed the market (and it had a VW engine) I was somewhat surprised when I put it on Craigslist at 9:00 on a Friday evening, and the car rolled away the next day (10:30am) with my full asking price of $5k stuck in my hand. My wife said I should just store it, and she was right. There, said it. So I replaced the '66 with another car, which I bored of quickly, sold and now I want to fulfill part of my bucket list and have as a keeper a working 911. I'm really after a long hood, but there is no way I can justify the sort of $$$ they are going for. Which leaves me with two options - backdate or a 912 with an engine upgrade. Talking to a friend who's family restores classic Porsches in France, he has suggested a 3.2 Carrera as the injection system is a little easier to look after if I backdate. I quite like the idea of rebuilding a 911 engine and there is an early 2.0 for sale for rebuild that I could then put it into a 912. While I really prefer the narrow body style, the thought of another car that needs something new welded every year, doesn't fill me with great joy. Sooooo with a meager $40k in my pocket now, what would you suggest? 912 with a 911 engine or backdate? I've waited through the summer SC / Carrera price panic, so the cars on offer should be around for more than a day. ![]() Having searched this on Pelican, the last discussion I could find was back in 2014. This is kind of the dream... Thanks! ![]() (Damn, sorry for the long post!) |

I would do a nice sleeper 912 with the 3.2.

Where are you located, Munky?
I agree with Nathan's advice or look for an SC to backdate. Once you are into a 3.2 Carrera there's not a whole lot of $$$ left in your budget to backdate it. You buy a 3.2 and you'll be driving a 3.2.

I'm in Minneapolis - Minnesota. So I fully expect to be spending some money on a couple of PPIs before then paying for shipping or a fun fly and drive at the very least!
I hear what you are saying about a 3.2. But whatever I end up with is intended to be a long term fun, wrenching project. |

I've got a rough running 72T with no rust that I'd consider selling, but not for 40G's.

Pricing on parts and labor have been on a steady increase. That dream car will cost you a lot more than that at the end of the day unless you can do ALL the work yourself, drivetrain or body. If I were one of these gifted p-car enthusiast, I would buy a cheap rust free SC and make it my dream car. Last edited by pmax; 08-19-2017 at 09:14 AM.. |

Why does this always happen to me? That would have been ideal. I been out buying this today. It's a California 99% rust free 1975 Annivesary Edition. Still, it's a narrow body, cost slightly more than the price of an engine core, and I won't feel guilty about making it a narrow body - long hood hot rod! ![]() And I've got enough cash for parts to make it how I want it. Thanks for all of the advice. Sorry if it seems this is a left turn. Just this one came up yesterday and seemed to fit with the program! |

^^^^ ha ha ha.
Thanks for the kind journey wish, I'm looking forward to it. ![]() I always thought 'rust free' meant that you were only paying for the parts of the car without rust... At least with this monster, I could have a good look at the areas where it normally hides! Now to pick it up! |

Middie guys have a thing for that car. You might see some surprising private offers via pm attempting to get you to flip for a quick $10-15k profit.
If the interior isn't trashed, you could sell that and keep the car for even more project money. Car sounds well bought. Be sure to post a project thread in 911 Tech.

Thanks for the advice.
The plaque on the glovebox says 172 out of 1500, but unfortunately the interior generally has gone. It's ideal for me, as it's pretty solid and will be a great project I won't have to fret about ruining a good car. Getting to pick it up on Monday evening now, after an issue with the haulage truck. Turns out the car is being sold as part of an estate. An estate that included 6 aircooled Porches! The first one sold was a '72 Coupe. It had been covered by three tarpaulins for about 15 years and the floor was done for and engine gone. They sold it for (and hold onto your hats for this) $2500. After that they realized what they were worth. There was a 69 that also was let go for a criminally low amount. There are still two other cars stored for sale, but they aren't sure if they are going to sell both due to sentimental reasons. The first is an 89 C4. The one I'm hoping they show me more than just a few photos of is a 1970 which looks to have a few million boxes on it. Again, it hasn't moved since sometime around 2000 and so far have only dug the back end of the car out. I don't know, maybe it's all a big scam, and when I go to pick up the majority of the '75 (which I stashed a bunch of parts in the trunk of my car as I paid a deposit) maybe the '75 will be gone and the rest just hot air... They met me with the '75 at a house that was for sale... I guess I will find out on Monday! |

Watching my local Craigslist twice a day.
Then it wasn't for the estate, just the '75. That's when the story unfolded (if true). Though I did see the '72 appear on Craigslist briefly and instantly thought to myself 'that's a scam'. We should see tonight with luck - if the car is still there for the pick up! |

Hope it's still there. I was actually going to suggest a midyear. Get a 75 or 74 and it has the bright trim and single mirror and narrow body. Also manual brakes, windows, and throttle lever. Still a lot out there for 20 or less which would give you a fair amount to backdate.
