So many burning questions. Here's another;

Nick you have been hanging here way too long not to acknowledge the color premium these cars command..... I cite as an example the light Blue BaT 964 last week that sold for $80,000..... Quite frankly w/ a little time I could find many more examples of color sales...... A continental orange SC coupe sold for $60,000ish within the last year. It was in exceptional knit. I will find it.

This is a great car......... I would definitely buy for $40,000.

Oh I acknowledge it, alright. I just think it's dumb to pay for color when you can get better cars for less or the same money.

Agreed; there are many cars that might meet an individuals requirements that can be had for less dollars. These are emotional cars and color premiums thrive on emotions.

The color is topped off with what I would call a well equipped enthusiast's car. This is a canyon carver built with sport seats, spoilers with LSD..... This is a driver's car.......

you do. but there are plenty of people who put a premium on some of the far out colors porsche put out there over the years. they set the market.

personally, that is one of my favorite things about the marque. the color pallete they worked in from the early mid '60's thru the mid 70's is mental.

you can always make a car better, but you can't change what the original color was.

i picked up a '73 RSR project awhile back that i certainly didn't need. but the car is originally a gulf blue non-sunroof coupe. building a gulf blue non-sunroof RSR has been on my bucket list of cars to build, so i bought it.

if it wasn't a gulf blue car, i likely wouldn't have seen the value in the tub and likely wouldn't have bought it.

color certainly matters to the market...

You and me both. I remind people how my 74 looked when it was listed for sale. I was targa shopping. But the seller was a body guy who got the good guy nod from Techweenie and it was originally a gulf blue car. While it is far from concours work, he took it bare metal most places and delivered a nice little g body gulf blue car. I never would have even considered the project if not for the color.

funny, i bought my '76 despite the color, guards red. it was very well sorted mechanically with a rebuilt 3.2 and a '75 title (i'm in CA) from new. so i bought it.

the red was actually growing on me.

but a lady pulled out in front of me and her insurance co. put close to $10k in my pocket for basically a front bumper and passenger fender.

i always wanted a leaf green long hood DD, so i tore the car apart, did an all steel backdate and painted it. i didn't have to put much money into it as i did all the work save paint.

i love the weird colors, and to guys like me, they're worth more money...

Looks like my '73 914 in the background, minus the rally lights and decent paint.

I remember that car.

Wish mine had a 3.6. Mine should really be parted out but I don't have the heart. It was my first 914. It's a numbers matching appearance group car with a really nice engine in it. And it's rusty and faded and dented and needs $20k of paint and body, maybe more. So it's just sitting in the sideyard these days.

I hear you. I have a super ratty ‘70 non-sunroof coupe that’s original color is pastel blue and I just recently picked up a big project ‘75 Mexico blue sunroof coupe for the same reason

You're never going to get to that project. You should just sell it.

Matt,
Every man with property should have a rusty old 914 setting outside somewhere.
It's the law in some states.
