DYNO results: 944SMAX chip and SFR exhaust
The original thread started over on "the 'List," you can view that HERE
I thought you guys might be interested too. As promised, I went to the dyno this morning. The dyno used was a Dynapack Dyno. I have never used one of them before and i can say that i am NOT impressed. It seems to read ridiculously low. But since this was basically done for AFR results it didn't matter. Next weekend I will retest everything using a trusted Dyno Dynamics Dyno. But for those that just want to see the actual results from this, here they are: **Remember numbers were from a DYNAPACK DYNO** stock: 131.5 WHP , 127.2 WTQ - GREEN 944SMAX chip: 135.1WHP , 130.8 WTQ - PURPLE 944SMAX chip and SFR exhaust: 141.2WHP , 137.9 WTQ - YELLOW This was the first stages on this chip. The final stage should be tested late next week. The next dyno run will have 2 charts (1 with the stock chip and SFR exhaust, and the other with the new 944SMAX chip and SFR exhaust) The last dyno run is difficult to see because the line is yellow, but it is there.

SWEET! I dig seeing where the Science meets the roads.
I think you get about 15-20 Drive Train loss from flywheel to the wheel, so maybe that accounts for lower number than we would think. Look for to the next test.

140ish hp "in the wheels" (ajajaja) sounds a bit low, but not by that much for a 944S.

Hi everybody,
This was the 'alpha' version, meaning the first test of new mappings. In a prior post on 'the list' jgp0rsche posted his first impressions and also on the MAXhpkit forum at: http://forums.951max.com/viewtopic.php?t=40 The goal of this chip was to address complaints 944S owners had of hesitation, poor throttle response, and poor idling. I wasn't going to try to get more power out of it until the next iteration. But as it turned out this chip alone accomplished the initial goal with flying colors, and increased the output power by almost 4HP. We are pleased. The chip he is testing next will be the production chip if the test works out as well as this one did. I anticipate release of the 944SMAX chip 11/01/06. I will notify Pelican and other resellers upon its release so they can add it to their product offering as they have done with the 951MAX chips. The retail price of the 944SMAX will be $175.00USD. Regards, Russell |

I pulled 125.8 HP at the wheels in my 83 944 8 valve. Your stock figures seem quite low.

It was on a Dynojet
125.8 HP at 5700 RPM 128.5 TQ at 4500 RPM 10 HP increase with exhaust and chip is pretty cool. I wonder if the dyno you are using is reading low or your wasn't running correctly from the begining. Stock 944 S is 188 HP at the crank so you should be pulling around 150 HP at the wheels stock. Speedy

what is the "sfr" exhaust system. seems like it does a fair job, complementing the chip set-up.
i have the FR.WILK dual power prom chip, and seeing my exhaust system is about 6 years old, its looking like time to shop for a new one. i'm considering taking the cat out of the picture, so any info about the SFR greatly accepted. bob.

Speedracing, my sentiments EXACTLY.
bigyagi, the "SFR" exhaust is the Speed Force Racing exhaust. It is VERY pricy, but i got the COMPLETE exhaust. From the Y-pipe back. I need to mention that I was using a high-flow cat and Bullet muffler. The exhaust is a full 2.5" with a 4" tip.

944SMAX SHIPPING!
The 944SMAX is now shipping. jgp0rsche is going to dyno the final product Wednesday or Friday of this week. 10/25 or 10/27.
He commented on the chip this evening, though it was raining and he couldn't really do a lot of testing: I didn't run it like I have the other chips, but something that is GREATLY noticeable, is the way it drives. It wants to accelerate. PERIOD. This car wants to be driven now. The throttle response is ridiculous. I swear it can feel me move my foot .001" on the pedal. Russell, once again I can't wait until dyno day! Needless to say, we're excited! Stay tuned for dyno results, we're anticipating 8-10RWHP increase over stock chip. Regards, Russell |

Dyna pacs are VERY wellregarded in the racing industry, and your test sounds like an anomoly. from a basic theoretical level they are eons ahead of the dynojet concept. It's a true brake dyno, which measures things as opposed to calculating things. They are new to the american market, relaively, so perhaps there was a snafu somewhere along the way.
Interesingly, I had my race car on a dyna pack, (hub driven brake dyno), a Clayton (wheel drum brake dyno), and a Dynojet (wheel drum inertia dyno), and the Clayton read highest, the Dynapak the lowest, and the Dynojet was both! LOL. Meaning that the others had the greatest consistency, while the dynojet was the most inconsistent. Too many assumptions/variables with the dynojet for me. Don't give up on the dynapac just yet.

I've got nothing against the Dynapak, and have heard many rave reviews such as you mention. In fact I've just found one local to me, so when I go to tuning the 911 variants I'll be able to use local guys. jgp0rsche was just disappointed in the numbers, and I told him early on the peak numbers are of no concern to me what so ever in the tuning phases, I just want a comparison on any dyno of the 944SMAX chip to stock. The dyna-pak gave me what I wanted, but it's his car and obviously he wants to see good numbers out of it. I think the limiting factor in this run was the dyno operator not being familiar with the machine. I know in Europe the dyna-pak is considered the reference for all others.

Actually right now, the rave in Europe is the DYNO DYNAMICS DYNO. Which is what I normally use. But it is a long drive fo rme to get there. The Dynapack was closer so I chose it. The Dyno Dynamics I use is a trusted dyno in this area. It gave a dead on reading for my 951.
I wasn't impressed at all with the Dynapack, I think it is a good concept, but have actually heard from many people that they can read between 20-40% low. It turns out it read 10WHP low. Which isn't bad, but it made more sense to see 141whp stock instead of 127 (first run) and 131 (second run). The Dynapack operator could tell it was off. 127whp is what a 944 8v n/a would get. From different dyno charts I have seen from other 944S's they average between 138-141whp, so obviously Porsche overstated the power output of this car 188bhp. The chip should make the 10whp tomorrow. If it does, you can bet these things will sell like hot cakes. 10whp = $17/HP (chip is $175), you cannot beat that on an N/A car.

I also forgot to mention, that the first was was inaccurate. The yellow run was actually the SFR exhaust and stock chip! I found out afterwards when i went to swap in a newer chip that Russell sent me and the DME had never been opened. It was my original stock DME.
