I did search..But why not a 996 trans again?

I'd love a g-50 but the Porsche tax guys are massive I guess. Why not a 996 6 speed in my g-body? I'm willing to mod things like torsion tubes and mounts.....
Will it not bolt up? Is there no compatibility with flywheel and clutches?
Thanks

A 996 Carrera gearbox? Starter is on the wrong side. They are engine mounted on M96 water cooled cars.

A 996 GT3 or Cup Car gearbox would be fine.

I thought someone did this recently but I could not find the story when I just looked.

It was not an easy task though. If I recall, they were planning a kit but there was a significant cost for it before even buying the tranny.

My only reservation is the sealed bearing on the pinion.

If the gearbox is updated and serviced, it's not really something to worry about.

The downsides of the box are that you cannot change the gear ratios on it and it's a single rebuild design. The interference press fit of the gears only takes one rebuild and then they get too loose to be reliable. You need all new gears on the second service of it.

What's the downside of 996 turbo trans?

axles, cost, length, weight, ratios, shifter, speedo, hydraulic clutch release

Is there anything I'm forgetting? Expect trouble with the ring gear?

Just 996 not turbo trans if they're different.
