Shag carpet source for '76 930 restoration?
I have a '76 Euro market non-sunroof 930 with the original leather and plaid interior. It only has about 40,000 miles on it.
As you can see from the photos the interior is in pretty good original shape, but it would look awesome with some new carpet. Does anyone sell a replacement kit of the real 930 tan shag carpet? This thick carpet was only used in early 930s I think, but maybe it was in other models too. I'd like to keep the car as original appearing as possible. If nobody makes a carpet set I might just have to remove the current carpets and steam clean them. ![]() ![]()

I didn't realize the early Turbos had shag carpet???
That sure is a beautiful car. Love the color. Begging for some Fuchs and the original tail though. Just my unsolicited 2 cents and not worth a penny more. Sorry I can't help, perhaps someone who's more savvy with the 76/77 930's will chime in

I call it shag carpet but it is really just a very thick cut pile.
I do need a tail if you know anyone selling one...the owner replaced the tail (doh!) when he added a late model intercooler. The 18" Speedlines were added when he upgraded to the yellow 993 Turbo brakes, but at least he kept the original 15" Fuchs and stock brakes and included them with the car. I need to find out if those 993 Turbo brakes will fit with the 17" Fuchs replicas. Last edited by G60SuperCharger; 09-12-2013 at 04:23 PM.. |

Your 993 Turbo brakes will be able to fit with 17" Fuchs replicas.. most are designed with larger brakes in mind.

I think the interior color is cork, not tan.

Interesting about the optional thicker carpet...I've had cars with silverknit and this seems thicker. I removed the shift shaft cover and took some pictures of the carpet...it's very plush like my daughters teddy bear.
Is this cork?I'm trying to decide if it's important to keep the carpet thick as delivered or just settle for regular silverknit. It's 70s fantastic like the plaid seats and that's part of the attraction to these early 930s. ![]() ![]()

I would try cleaning them first, after all, they are only original once. Not sure if the thick carpet was an option on 3.0 litre cars, my car has it and it doesn't show up on the COA, so I would believe that the shag carpeting was standard on our cars.
Good luck and if you try to steam clean them, please post the results.

Interesting that you have this thick carpet and its not mentioned on the COA. I haven't gotten a COA yet but it will be interesting to see if it's noted.
I have an extensive brochure collection, and going back through them I see no mention of thicker carpets being featured as standard or optional. |

I ended up having mine steam cleaned and they came out looking so good I decided not to replace the carpet. I sold that 930 a couple years ago...I got good money for it but I wish I still had it.

All 1976 and 1977 @30 Turbo's came with thick, silver knit.
No one in the world has it. It's is unobtainable. Silver knit is available and many will say they have it BUT it is not the same as it isn't nearly as thick. The pile isn't as deep. It isn't the same as original. Sucks but that's just the way it is. |

My '77 930 has the thicker carpet as shown in the picture. Screws get lost in it.

Okay thanks.. i almost canned it last night too..
I am Washing it up and it is really coming back to life (shag carpet teddy bear look) comparing it next to brand new silverknit it is so much thicker and longer and so much better quality. Cannot justify installing the new set now..

It looks like Cork to me. I restored my 79 carpet. I'm not sure how mechanical you are. But I removed all of the carpet and cleaned it one piece at a time with a Bissell carpet machine and Bissell soap using the upholstery attachment. I also had a squirt bottle with 50/50 Purple Power degreaser/water and a soft bristle brush for the tough spots. It removed all the dirt and grease stains. The nastiest water, oil, dirt mix I have ever seen came out of this carpet.
The color fade will require dying. If you look under the seats you will see the original color matched the leather. I was lucky and Superior restoration is local. Superior Restoration Products I took the carpet from the back section that goes under the seat to them. They have all the factory color codes for interiors. He mixed a bottle of water based Carpet dye in Porsche Cork. We tested a spot that had never seen the sun and it matched perfect. I sprayed all the carpet with a touch-up gun on a makeshift bench (sawhorses and plywood) on my side yard. Taping up the turbo script was the hardest part. I don't have a before pic but this is how it looks now. The lighting in the garage isn't the best. ![]()

![]() If anyone knows where to get this carpet in "Russett Red" I would really like to know, any leads appreciated. I have reached out to the usual places here in the US and looks like it's not avail and has never been reproduced according to several people. They have a replacement iin silver knit thicker pile but the color is off. I made the mistake of assuming I could find this carpet when I took my car apart and highly regret removing the front kick panels. I would also be interested in some nice used pieces maybe rom the rear seat area too if anyone has anything. Here's a pic from the 76 dealer guide. The Turbos I believe came standard with the thicker "Velour" carpet and was optional on 911 and Carrera (someone correct me if I am wrong on this).

Well, this is interesting, I had no idea the carpet was thicker on the 76/77 models. My 77 has dark brown interior but when I got it the floor carpets had been replaced with black. I got some brown ones from a Pelican but they are not the same thick teddy bear carpet as shown in the picture above.
I don't suppose anyone has teddy bear thick floor carpet in dark brown. I am just looking for the four floor pieces, I have everything else.
