Engine for a Porsche 917K
I'm planning on building a replica Porsche 917. The original race car had a turbo charged 12 cyclinder air cooled. These are long gone away now, although a couple survive in museums and some in original cars.
I don't know much about Porsche's, but I want to keep the 917 somewhat "authentic". I would like to put in the most powerful air-cooled Porsche engine I can. I've heard that the later 911 turbos have water cooled heads - there may be space for small radiators at the very rear of the 917, but the front really only has space for an oil cooler. I'm not looking to build the engine myself - I want it done professionally. It needs to be able to run on street gas, but I can put race gas in it at the track. Thoughts / suggestions on where I should start looking? I need names of reputable builders. |

Stephen Kasper of IA. Build some bad turbos. Water cooled heads = big bucks...but if you have it to burn than a 962 engine would certainly make it scoot.
Ninemeister builds some wicked engines and offers probably the best aftermarket heads out there. Do a search on Rennlist also. They are across the pond so the exchage rate hurts.

That replicar will be nice and light. How fast do you want to go? A nice carbed 3.2 would work. A stock 3.6 would work. So would a mild 3.0 for that matter.
It all depends on your budget. No need to worry about authenticity as you are not putting a 12 in there. Build a nice motor with sharp throttler response and you will be happy. Cheers

Got a welder? Put 2 flat six engines together as one. Be sure to post the project, I'd like to see it done.

As getting the real flat-12 is not feasible and a flat-6 will not be the correct engine why not looking into other engines for this car that are not made by Porsche. You could make a lot of power with a small block Chevy and spend much less doing so. Now lets see how many people criticize me for saying that.

Take a $70 K chassis, add a $10K small block and end up with a rather plain kit car maybe worth $80K.
Build a some what correct high performance Porsche flat six and the sky is the limit. Bill Freeman sold this car a Barret Jackson for $178K. If all you want is a Chevy powered car, buy a Z06. With a 350 HP NA Porsche 6 this little car will scoot. Add a turbo or two at say 600 HP and the performance will be world class. ![]() ![]() I forgot the engine. 3.5 MFI 350 hp Porsche flat six. ![]()

I'd rather have a 700 + hp small block in the car. Do you want to go fast or do you want a car that is viewed by some as "correct" never mind a flat 6 is still not the correct engine.

Why not just build up a 700HP twin turbo 964 flat6 motor? It'd reliably run 1.25bar of boost all day, every day
