List of "must do" mods
Is there a list of "must do" mods for 79' 930? By must do mods, I mean things that prevent mechanical failure rather then increase performance. For instance are the cis airbox mod and cam tension upgrade applicable to this car? I just want to make sure everything is in tip top shape before I start reaching for 400hp

Make sure the cam tensioner upgrade is done. that is the first "safety" mod that should be done to our year 930. As for 400hp, don't hope to get there until you go to efi. CIS prevents us from getting to far over the 300hp mark.

Dont know if you would consider a Wide Band A/F sensor a mod but I think it is important that you monitor and or stay on the safe side of A/F mixture and a WB sensor is a good way to do it. Not to mention it is a good tool to tune your car.

I think the above statement concerning the limits of CIS is a typo. There are several CIS 930s on this board that go over 400HP to the rear wheels.
Other than tensioners there is not much you need to do externally to your engine to protect it at that level. If you decide to go into the engine there are many things that can be upgraded but may not need to if 400 is your goal. Keep your A/R ratios in check, don't over-rev, change the oil regularly, and keep the normal operating temp of the engine under 220* and she should live a long life.

looking through all previous receipts and work orders i don't see anything of the tensioners. my pre buying inspection didn't say anything about it either. can I easily visually check this?

Yes. Look at the face of each cam cover. You should see a small diameter oil line that enters the cover using a banjo fitting.

Those look like pressure fed tensioners to me...

In the words of Martha Stewart: "It's a good thing"
I think the old skool mechanical tensioners probably serve a purpose on a full blown race car, but for us street boys, this is the way to go.
