Christmas came early this year

I am in the dark days of my rebuild. Waiting for parts.

Time stretches out to infinity while you sit twiddling your thumbs looking at all the pieces of your beloved car strewn about the garage.

Today was a good day...FedEx man delivered pistons cylinders and ARP headstuds and rodbolts...yum yum.

Following along too. Did you use that Anchor shop for your heads? Kind of a funny website; they stress ultrasound hot tanks more than the head rebuilding. Let us know how you heard of them. Would they clean your block for you too? Sometimes the case doesn't come out looking as nice as the heads and other parts of the engine that get boiled, blasted, and coated.
My engine is at 90k and not been apart to my knowledge. Your ring pics are scaring me!

Haven't been to any machine shop yet as I was waiting for these pistons and cylinders to arrive. I decided to use Verden Tool (in Dover NJ) for all the machine work, including the heads. Verden is much closer to my house than Anchor Atlantic. I can drive my parts there instead of boxing and shipping them. I heard of both of these places right here in the pelican forums.

I'll have the case hot tanked and washed at the shop, along with a bunch of other parts. The only things that will be bead blasted on the engine itself are the heads (a normal part of the reconditioning process). I don't want blasting media near any part of the engine that touches oil. The case and chain boxes won't look as new as the heads and cylinders, but I don't really care.

Jake, you must be getting stoked. When i got my stuff in, i felt like a kid at christmas

Yeah, as long as the parts are clean, who cares if they look like new or not? You would be safe having case/engine stuff soda blasted tho, as it flushes easily, and any residual dissolves almost immediately in the oil flush-through when u first turn the motor over.

The P&Cs are LN Engineering Nickies with JE pistons. I ended up purchasing them through Chris Carroll at Turbokraft. According to Chris, he specs a slightly tighter piston to cylinder clearance than the off-the-shelf kits from LN Engineering. He also specs a different top piston ring that he claims is stronger than the standard OEM ones.

I inquired about these differences speaking with Charles Navarro at LN Engineering. Charles mentioned that he often specs the tighter piston clearances and non-oem ring set similar to Turbokraft for custom orders. For the off-the-shelf stuff, he runs OEM rings and piston clearances because he says that many people flip out when the parts don't exactly match factory specs. Charles says that because of the advanced metallurgy of his cylinders and the fact that their expansion is matched to the JE pistons, you can run tighter piston clearances without issue. I also seem to recall that Charles said this top ring they are running is a motorcycle ring...whatever that means and I'm not sure if I am remember correctly.

Jacob: I had my case soda blasted and flushed came out super clean. I'll be timing my cams and be buttoning up tomorrow. Once you have everything it will move quickly.

Steve,

Yes, still waiting, but things are moving. Camshafts and rockers are supposed to arrive tomorrow. My crankshaft has been shipped as of today, should have it in 5 business days. I also placed a HUGE order with Pelican today for all the other little bits I need...let me tell you that the little stuff adds up to a large bill. I'm planning to send the bearings to Calico to have them coated...supposed to be a quick turnaround (2-3 days).

I did speak with the machine shop last Friday. Things are coming along. They said my exhaust valves were marginal and showed signs of floating, so all are being replaced. I expect them to be done this week or next. All in all, I should be in a position to begin reassembly by early December.

Like Turboo934 says, once you have everything it should move quickly.

Parts have returned from "spa treatment" in California

Crankshaft was delivered today. Had it magnafluxed, nitrided, and micropolished. Oil plugs were removed and the oil passages were cleaned. Had the #4 main cross-drilled "while he was in there"





I Mic'd the journals before and after this reconditioning process, here are the results:




This weekend I should be picking up all the stuff from the machine shop...getting very close to reassembly time now

machine shop porn

Picked up my bits from the machine shop Saturday before thanksgiving. Lots to look at, but the heads are the most exciting

Nice and shiny. Note twinplug machining. Exhaust valves are new, intakes were reused.

I didn't know that the LN cylinders had that type of bead blasted finish on them.

So does the nitride process add dimension to the crank? I noticed that your journals measured larger after the re-conditioning.


Are you going to measure in inner diameter of the big ends of the rod with the bearings installed and match them to the journals as well?

Looks like I will be somewhere slightly north of 15k. Machine shop costs were more than I anticipated initially and I have decided for sure that I'm firing the second set of plugs, so have added in the cost of the necessary ignition components into the "budget." Planning on using the electromotive XDI2 system sourced from Clewett.

Armondo at CCR did the crank for me. Yes, he was able to get growth from the nitriding process as you observed from my before and after measurements. That was the plan to get my crank back into spec. The heat involved in the nitriding process requires that the oil galley plugs are removed and replaced, so as an added bonus your crank gets proper cleaning of the oil passages. Since the plugs are out anyway, its only a little bit of extra labor to have #4 crossdrilled...can you see the slippery slope here?

I've purchased a bore gauge and my plan is to measure the rod big ends and the mains in the case with the bearings installed and compare with my journal measurements to insure all the clearances are within spec before assembly.
