I have a real DP air damn like this and it's nothing special at all. It was on the car when I got it. They look nice and work well though.
I've done alot of structural fiberglass fabrication when I worked for a boat builder in the 80's and this air damn is a low grade low strength chopper gun/fiberglass matte lay up from a female mold. That kind of layup is quick and easy. Spray in the gel coat and then spray in the chopped up glass fibers already wetted out with polyester resin and it lays up nice in and around corners with few air bubbles underneath but has little strength and alot of bulk from all the excess resin absorbed in it that can't be squeeged out by hand before it goes off because the short length chopped fiberglass strands would just pull apart as you did it compared to a hand layup of fiberglass cloth that takes 10 times more time and preperation to do but is around 10 times stronger and lighter. When I restored my DP air damn I ground off the DP logo on the sides and laid up glass on the backside to fill in where it was because I hated the way it looks. Then I ground down the entire back side interior surface to smooth it out and prep it and laid up cut out to shape pieces of 6oz and 8oz fiberglass cloth to give it more strength. Made the bottom of the fragile splitter that's parrallel to the road surface about 1/4" thick with layers of fiberglass cloth to make it more durable. Anyway, I just wanted to say the fibeglass quality of an origonal DP airdamn is low and the lower cost DP airdam copy available in the states without all the shipping from Germany or wherever is probably just as good and a better buy. |

My 0.02: The AIR item is every bit the part the DP unit is albeit the AIR comes (at least when I got mine), with the front oil cooler opening glassed shut...and no mesh screen. Unless you need to have the embossed DP logo, the AIR unit will be more than suitable.
Personally I like the look of the DP / Air item, but for quality I would go with the injection molded RUF valance if you are after precision fit with all the accessories and a bolt-on affair. I love mine...but not enough I suppose as I've yet to mount it! Love to find a spare one if anyone has one btw. |

Thank you for all the input! I'm still waiting for DP's reply regarding the total cost. If it is too much, I may go with AIR. If anybody here has an original DP valance in good condition that you would like to sell, kindly let me know.
Thanks!

Groovie Ghoulie, thanks for the advise. Honestly, I am just after for the looks of it but just in case I put an oil cooler there, what brand and where to buy the oil cooler that will fit in there?

I will say my AIR piece was plenty strong it took some pretty hard hits over the years and the structural integrity was fine albeit the gelcoat cracked. If you get the AIR piece I recommend laying some more fiberglass on the inside if you are going to open up the oil cooler opening especially around the bottom edge where the piece is narrowest. I did that when I did the bodywork this last time and it made a difference.

There are TONS of good aftermarket kits out there. Mine came with the car when I bought it, so not sure but mine is prolly an older model. Without the cooler, it looks empty and weird to have a front air dam with the opening empty. just shows off the battery box sheet metal.

johnghini, thanks for the info!
gssmith660 and jfairman, DP or AIR, reinforcement is needed. Noted! Thanks! groovie ghouilie, I'm planning to put a mesh screen in there but adding the oil cooler would serve it's real purpose plus the benefit of another oil cooler. Thanks! DP emailed me the shipping price which is 355 euro which is about $430. I am just confirming the price for the valance which is 371 euro if I will be charged with VAT making it 441 euro.

I would really suggest contacting a freight forwarder (easy to find online under your city / freight forwarder search) to coordinate this shipment. Using a courier (UPS, DHL, FedEx) makes the price outrageous. If you can deal with roughly 20 days on the water and a couple to clear customs, the freight will be a fraction. Air freight is an option too...and still less than courier and roughly 3 to 5 days. BTW, no VAT as you are exporting. You will pay whatever taxes / duties are required by taking delivery in the US however...it surely won't be 20%. The process may sound complicated but I assure you it is not...it just doesn't show up on your doorstep in 7 days but you pay for this convenience w/ a courier. |

I used a rear deck grill from an SC and cut it to fit the oil cooler opening and BTW I don't have a center cooler I have a turbatrol cooler in the right fender but I cut a chunk of plexi to close the opening in the air dam on the chance I put a center mounted cooler in some day.

Thanks for all the info!
I bought the unit from DP. They'll be shipping it in a few days. And then bought the front oil cooler kit from elephant racing. I'll be posting pics when everything is done. Thanks again!

Wow, resurrecting an OLD thread....
Nope, I need both of mine, but you can order them still brand-new. Part number dp11G-K151GF Frontstangenunterteil F3 dp11G nur für Turbo Frontbumper-lower part F3 (only for Turbo) Try sending them an email about that part, but it ISNT cheap. DP makes a few different styles of front spoilers. This is mine, it has the fog light openings above, and brake duct intakes below. Here's a link to the DP photo gallery page.
