Can you post a picture of the car? Is it an aftermarket kit or does it have the 930S cooler in the front? I have the 930S cooler and the only time it ever got that hot was sitting in traffic for 30 mins but cooled right down when we started moving again.

Welcome to the forum!
That's too hot. We should NOT allow our cars to go over 250* - which is about where the needle is; however, taking it real easy - low rpms and short shifting - at those temps would minimize damage. Traffic is not our allied and in Manhatan that what you get. P-cars are not built for slow traffic. And yes, external coolers help - some. Any more info requires full car pictures. It is a forum rule... |

I would think there is an oil cooler in the right front fender with a fan on it. Check and see that the fan works.
If there is no oil cooler there and I don't mean a worthless trombone thing, install one with a fan and thermostat in the oil cooler to turn the fan on. If there is a real oil cooler, fan, and thermostat something isn't working and the origonal thermostat screwed into the end tank of the cooler can be replaced with some BMW thermostat that will turn on the fan at a lower temperature. Some people put in a switch or use the rear wiper switch if the wiper is removed to manually turn on the oil cooler fan when sitting in traffic. Oil temp that high is not good. |

No room for a front fender cooler in the slant noses. . Some years had them in right rear fender fed by the fender intake. If you don't have one there I would add one in the front spoiler.

Make sure you've got a good [clean] motor oil: I think this forum has settled on three: Mobil1 Synthetic EP or V-twin 20/50; Brad Penn Synthetic 20/50; or VR1 by Valvoline...
And, make sure your timing is not too retarded while at idle... I added a front oil cooler with two electric fans [t-stat controlled]. One fan comes on at 95C and the 2nd at 100C. The second used to come occasionally, until I got rid of my 5* vacuum retard at idle... Even in 105*F temps down here in New Orleans, I don't see over 215F... My cruise [highway] temps are usually about 175-80F...

If it's an '87-'89 M505 the oil cooler is just in front of the passenger side rear wheel and can be seen thru the opening in the rear fender. To add a front oil cooler you will need to add the euro 930S valence. A much better look if you don't care about stock IMHO.

Ok, they are Triplets
![]() I had the same issue and the switch on top of the oil cooler went bad. It would not send the signal to turn on the fan when the oil got hot. What year is your car and is it a factory slant? I ask this because I can look at the wiring on mine and show you how to "jump" the switch so you know if its your fan went bad or your switch. But before this, I would start by changing the fuse and swaping the relay with a known good one. Sweet car!

Hey would you guys please consider stopping by my Facebook "Flachbau" page and posting a pic or two of your car there? I'm trying to start a slant registry of sorts and just getting a handle on contacts and cars would be greatly appreciated.
