Hey Roland...you must have a friend with the SBB car maintenance department ;)
Looking real nice!

proffighter 09-05-2016 04:12 AM

Long time since, but...

Still nothing new worth to share. While still working on my insulation (not much motivation for that job, not the result;)) I am looking for other things I want to add maybe:

1st is the ER quick change bla bla X-Brace:

Elephant Racing 935 X Quickchange Strut Brace ERMP2162200 - Elephant Racing - ERMP-2162200 | Pelican Parts

As I have already mounting points, I only would buy the cross, unfortunately only available with brackets etc... Because my points are not at same point, I have to cut away about 20mm at each end and recut threads inside. Does anybody has that brace installed? Wonder if there is enough beef inside for threads?

2nd I saw that Rothsport oil check valve. Makes sense, but is there really an advantage or just in case of leakages?

Pelican Parts - European Automotive Parts and Accessories - Porsche • BMW • Mercedes • Volkswagen • Audi • Saab • Volvo • MINI

3rd This fire extinguisher mount:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search_2014.cgi?SUPERCAT_FLAG=Y&make=POR&Conte xt_make=&please_wait=N&LastVisited_input=911M&Prev ious_Section=&forumid=8&threadid=&LastVisited_inpu t=911M&make=POR&description_side=BK-R-9530+&GoSearchSideFlag=T&command=DWsearch&command= DWsearch&REFINE=Y&FORUM_REFER=&SUPERCAT_FLAG=Y&Pre vious_Section=&LastVisited_input=911M&make=POR&des cription=BK-R-9520+&GoSearch_side.x=0&GoSearch_side.y=0

Is it free of play, no noises, rattling etc.? Other issues like poor clamping force?

Any experiences?

Flieger 09-05-2016 11:02 AM

I have an extinguisher, not that same mount, but the rattle is not from the mount it is from the handle (trigger) on the extinguisher itself.

sladey 09-05-2016 10:55 PM

I've got the elephant racing cross brace - very happy with it.

At the front it relies on screwing through to some substantial (3mm thick?) backing plates that go the other side of the body panel - in the inner wing. So it isn't screwed into the inner wing, it's effectively clamped to it and very strongly - the inner wing is sandwiched between the two elephant racing brackets.

I've no idea if you could cut 20mm off and re-thread it - you'd be better off asking Chuck at Elephant Racing. However if you do then you're also moving slightly the point at which the two struts join each other - don't know if that would cause a problem.

IMHO I would suggest if you fit it then fit what they supply in the way that they supply it

I know how the brace is mounted, no doubt it's fine. There are two reasons for me not to use the delivered brackets.
First, I have already mounting brackets welded in earlier (see pics fresh out of paint cabine), they will also conflict with the other ones.
Point of joint (ha what a nice term) will not be different, only angle, but there is no issue. BTW I asked Chuck already, just wanted to see, what others may think.
Second, I have a strut bar which I like very much and therefore I cannot use the rear brackets of the ER strut.
Originally, I wanted to make my own strut, but this would be quite big effort, because I like the Idea of the adjustable ends there to set a little strain.

I have to check in once in awhile , nice to see everyone else is busy in life but your car is totally to clean Roland . Keep up the slow steady progress it will finish itself one day ...

That's what I am waiting for;)

proffighter 10-12-2016 11:53 AM

While still waiting for my X-Brace from Heigo (more later) I received some pieces. Rubber, seals etc. and a R-9530 Quick Release Fire Extinguisher Mount. Earlier I bought the SPA Extreme 1kg Novec 1230 extinguisher.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476300435.jpg

Of course I had to save some weight here too:

Drilled the handles and made an aluminum pin

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476300626.jpg

I bought the bigger one (90mm) version, because the bottle diameter is 80mm (small mount has 76.2mm / 3"). I used hard rubber to fill the gap. As I am not really happy, I ordered now the smaller one too, plan to machine the clamp to fit my extinguisher...

However, let me show some details I don't like (some of you might think I am an awkward guy, but that's what I am expecting in that price range.)

First I cannot understand, why the drillings are so close to the corners, bevels sometimes cut therefore

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476301209.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476301239.jpg

There are machining tracks where there should not be:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476301320.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476301448.jpg

One of the biggest issues besides the finish is the machining broke through into drilling, right one visible here, but left is affected too

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476301596.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476301661.jpg

This is probably due too much heat when anodising / gas and therefore acid acting instead of anodizing
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476301824.jpg

Poor finish here too, no parallel surface and brow at the side

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476301917.jpg

proffighter 10-13-2016 08:51 AM

Review second mount

Today I received the smaller mount. All in all the same issues, but some diffences too, just wondering abouthttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/shake.gif

Handle anodized at the smaller one, clamping parts and centers not. Bigger one vice versa. on the raw parts machining quit visible (compared to the anodized parts which are satined)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476377066.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476377207.jpg

small machining fault vs. bigger one at the clamp (note: same measurements, so no reason for diff, make me think of different suppliers)

Love your attention to detail! Thanks for pointing out the shortcomings on the brey-Krause parts. Great stuff, and really enjoying what you are doing!!

proffighter 10-22-2016 01:32 PM

After machining some weight off the BK mount and increased clamp diameter, it's ready for test fit (to compare I made pic of the bigger mount to:

proffighter 10-22-2016 01:39 PM

Main reason I choose a smaller extinguisher was is size. So it will fit on the tunnel in front of the shifter. First I had to install some Tubtara nuts:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1477172116.jpg

Mount base fits :)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1477172197.jpg

And finally the complete thing, like the result very much

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1477172284.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1477172305.jpg

Now back home, because the shifter and handbrake lever are black, I willanodize the mount black too

WinRice 10-22-2016 02:43 PM

Nice to see some progress, gives me hope for mine!

Very, very clean

Ukusto 10-22-2016 07:12 PM

Great work!

proffighter 10-23-2016 04:16 AM

Anodized, bolts machined for a bit weight save and nicer finish. Ready to assemble (little detail: Plastidipped the springs to avoid scratching and noise)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1477224909.jpg

And the final result. Looks even better than I imagine before

proffighter 11-01-2016 12:11 PM

A couple of weeks ago I decided to buy an x-brace for the trunk. First I checked the ER. Not bad, but not fitting out of box (I already have mounting brackets welded-in). Further I like it a bit more beafier there. So I asked Heigo, who made my cage too. They are one of the most expirienced regarding cage etc. here in Europe and an old Porsche near brand, still all made in Germany. I was really suprised, that an individual piece made according my measurements was only a couple of Euro more than the ER x-brace. Of course I had to wait for, but here it is, very nice piece:)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1478030621.jpg

I have do drill the brackets to bolt down, made only M8 holes to have all options then.

As my hunger for weight loss never stops, I bought some lighter battery terminals too. Almost half the weight of the massive copper ones before. Also I like the look and the fact, that the cable can be crimped. This leads me to the problem I did not expect before: No one of the vehicle electricans seems to have this F-type crimping tool... Maybe I will be lucky once, otherwise I have to make my own crimping matrix.

However Hollow drilled and machined head of the bolts too:

proffighter 12-29-2016 03:34 AM

I often thought about making a new wiring harness, even I did this about ten years ago already. Reason is mainly that I not used automotive wires then (which will not be a problem I guess) and much too thick wires, almost all are 2.5mm2 and more. Quite a lot of copper weight to save here. Further I want to make a new fuse box and relay holder.

First I worked on the fuse boxes, replaced the huge nuts by Tubtaras:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1483014718.JPG

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1483014718.JPG

Lots of wire and connector I will need, here just a few I have:

proffighter 12-29-2016 03:37 AM

After many hours of bending, grinding and drilling the finished item, of course with hollow drilled bolts and aluminum Tubtaras;)

Nice work as always Roland , good to see you have still had some steady progress through the winter . I'm back out of the brace after another surgery on my hand and at it again in the garage myself . May have a finished product for you in the near future , wish me luck.

Hi my friend

Nice to hear you're on the way of recovering well. Had no issues with health since my surgery, but life is absorbing my time sometimes in different ways, so car has to wait then. Now I hope to make some more progress than in the last couple of months.

Get well soonSmileWavy

You may have over-red, that it has a different reason, mainly my anancastia to work on everything at least twice:D

Seriously, I just was not happy enough with the result from 10 years ago and had some money to spend for wiring, connectors etc.. as my christmas gift to myself:)

I spent the last couple of weeks to make my own Wiring diagramm plus disposition and ddraft for cables, fuse box etc.

They look like this:

Same as my process:

1. Mockup in cardboard until I get it right
2. Fabricate in metal
3. Stand back and admire work
4. While admiring, realize it could be better
5. Mockup again and re-fabricate

:D

While waiting for some more cables for my SDS EFI (thanks to Ross from SDS for great customer service once moreSmileWavy ) I worked a bit on the Instrument harness, much snow and cold here, nicer to sit in the living room now than kneeing in the car now:D

All cables crimped instrument-side. Next weekend test fit and final routing in the car:

Way too heavy! You need to figure out a way to "lighten" that bunny. Holes in the ear? Sic! I know, sorry.

Roland, sorry to drag this up from the past, but are you using the throttle positioner along with the MAP? I am assuming the TPS is only for enrichment? Gauges look great, BTW.

Hello Pat

Sorry for late reply, was not online since a while... Yes MAP is main parameter, TPS only for enrichment/throttle response

Hi Garry

All fine, thanks for asking. Spent a lot of time doing other things, for example bought a new lathe and drillpress (or whatever you call that in english). Took quite a lot of time to install them in a smart way in my little room. Also search for the most usefull options/tools is timeconsuming. However I am done more or less now and will go on with working on the car. But no hurry, it's summertime here:D
