No Paul, no Shannon for the drive. A bummer indeed. :P
|
Murphy's Law is in full effect.
Turbo pukes. FedEx overnight (have you priced this??? HOLY SH--) turbo to rebuilder on opposite coast. Rebuilder rebuilds turbo in record time. Rebuilder ships turbo from east coast to west coast using FedEx GROUND. No way to recall the turbo - gotta let it ride. 5 business days until arrival, which means... 4 calendar days before planned departure for Rennsport. The Universe is fully welcome to go <enter grotesque act here> itself. |
Total FML moment when he told me that. I'm so sorry.
|
Chris, all I can do is chuckle - it's nobody's fault. All we can do is move forward on this brave new course. :)
But yeah, FML describes my initial thoughts. |
Funny how no matter the planning, trying to get a machine ready for a certain date always involves a serious, last minute hump-fest. I raced motorcycles for 10 years, and no matter what I did, prior to each event (about 10 each year), I was pulling all-nighters, or 3 hour sleepers, for several days prior.
Good luck with the time-crunch, Kenik, and BTW, your engine compartment fuse/relay panel looks soooooooooooo stock (NOT) - ha ha!!! :D |
Ronnie, it'll look great underneath the cover. ;)
|
Fuggen', hidden high performance, MF!!!
I think you should efff that "stock" ruse and let the car rock out with its cawk out, bro!!!! :D |
The only thing that will be completely and visually non-stock is the Teflon passenger seat. This ensures that I can clean the sharts off of the seat, from the people who come for a ride in a "stock" car.
|
Sweet, but with Teflon, watch out for flying sharts at the moment of expulsion! Might need to wear goggles when you have a passenger along!
|
I'll only scare people on sharp left handers, with the door open.
|
Sounds like a wise plan; don't want to have a shart eating grin on yer mug - literally!
|
Car is now live with a non-puking turbo. Comic interlude at 0:48.

nice! It's allllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!!!
(couldn't help but feel like Ronknees there takin one in the face - he's no dodger!) |
^^^
Everyone should be treated to a facial from time to time, right?!?! Excellent about the turbo fix, Kenik, BUTT that stock intercooler sure looks out of place (aka - lame) surrounded by all that decidedly non-stock goodness on display in that thar engine bay! Reach down, nutt up, and install the Garretson, bub!!! :D |
Ronnie, the Garretson will be back on shortly.
|
Kenik, your AFR says VE does it mean very efficient : )
Sounds very meaty. I will also try my new zork after I get my MOT done. Sorry neighbours. I intend to drill it for a valve though so I can tone it down some on my home area. |
It really isn't that loud. And I like the 7006. I know some of you like turbo whine, but I like how the 7006 sounds very NA.
|
Very nice. I know you will love it.
|
My holset with #18 turbine housing with zork is LOUD.
I went from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmvyscXRCNU to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1GG2t8xn7M because GSF forgot the AFR bung I need for checking the tune. Plus I cant MOT the car with zork anyway but I just had to test it first. |
Congratulations Kenik, sounds great. Now get out and tear up the town :D

BTW - Paul is slacking - I woulda' thunk that he would have seized the opportunity to post a pic of his Garretson-superior, ginormous, better than Viagra intercooler . . . could pull from the 20+ other pictures that he's posted of it, tha' gloating (or is that "goating" ?!?!) beech! |
So now we are posting idle videos??? Guess I'll join in - a tad rich with the current heat.
Considering swapping out the hooligan for an outlaw over the winter. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TfgW0I7MZI4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
The car lives! And although there are the expected teething problems, overall things are going much smoother in the tuning department than I'd expected. Given the car hasn’t been tuned beyond a “finger in the air” conservative ignition map, and using an AFR to dial in the Leask, I’m impressed.
The positives:
And now, the Negatives:
So the jury is still out 48 hours before departure for Rennsport. If we can sort out the above issues, the 930 will go. If not, the ‘66 will get another return trip to Monterey instead. We'll keep banging trying to get the turbo road worthy. Stay tuned... http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c7..._02_52_Pro.jpg |
Kenik - you are making progress! When you talk about registering boost - are you using an analog boost gauge or the crap factory gauge on the tach?
|
Also this may be a stupid question but did you check the torque on bolts on the cold side before the turbo was installed?
|
Crap factory, but even the factory gauge doesn't register a zero at 5000 RPM. But I will check the data logs, too. Butt dyno confirms the boost leak, as well.

Anal log. Sounds like constipation.
|
That should not be a problem.....once the boost is working well...........
Have fun on the trip. regards, al |
So how was the trip (ASSuming problems were sorted in time, buttofcourse) - any skid marks laid down (on the seat)?!?!
|
2600 miles later, I can report that the 930 stayed home. It was close, but no cigar.
|
Boost leak problem solved. Minor setup issue with the solenoid was leaving the WG open, as I'd guessed. Haven't driven it yet, since the turbo is back out of the car to address the oil leak.
The good news is that the cause of the leak seems to have been identified. Just waiting for a new oil feed tube to arrive and we should be ready for another crack at it! I'm going to start out road tuning, via the data logging. Once I think I have it perfect, we'll move onto the dyno for final tuning. The fewer pulls I have to pay for, the better. |
Kenik,
Congrats on the progress - I'm sure the wait will be worth it. Phil |
Too bad about the car not being ready for RS Kenik, but it looks like it's getting there! So a leaky oil supply tube (different than tube leaks that Paul is familiar with), eh?
|
You know it is getting close when you start focusing on whack-ass details and BS.
First, what's not whack-ass is getting the big IC to fit right under the decklid. We took a stock IC up-pipe, cut it up and have mocked up a new up-pipe that will be welded in a configuration that will work. I'll get some pics on this ASAP, but it seems the intercooler conundrum is almost resolved! Back to the whack-ass BS and there's nothing more whack-ass than electrical gremlins. These gremlins are so whack, I had to call in the services of a local auto electrical genius. So far, he's resolved the following previous non-op issues:
Other stuff that was more mundane, but is now done:
So with a fully rebuilt engine and transmission, fully sorted electrical system and other mechanicals, this will officially be the ugliest, most mechanically sound 930 on the planet. ETA for completion is now EOD Monday. Fingers crossed. |
Nice, congrats on getting close man.
|
^ Thanks! You've seen it more recently than I have! :D
|
Finish line in sight!
|
CAR IS READY! . Too late to go get it tonight, but tomorrow, we'll be in business!
