Rear Bumper Ideas -pix please

Removed the bumper from my 89 Coupe (narrow body) with 3.3 T (heavily massaged over ) to remove K27 for freshening up. I never liked the heavy rear bumper. I want to do something "unorthodox" in the rear and since this change is not permanent to the body I really don't care about originality (this is my toy car the other 911s are too classic to mess around with).

My idea is to cut the original bumper right inside of the mounting brackets and to leave the center of the bumper open. I am thinking to use narrow EU bumper guards to cap off the bumper. I think it will aid in cooling of the turbo and allow better access to engine. It will also give the car a very radical look. The idea is to have pre 73-ish length bumpers without a center piece but using the original bumper corners (actually saving the original bumper but buying a junk one).

I am thinking to make a detachable wire mesh shroud (no chicken wire) formed like the removed section of the bumper with a nice solid frame that can be powder coated or painted to match the bumper.

I think the visual impact of a glowing turbo and flames shooting out of the zork will be hair raising

My other idea is to use the factory bumper with out rubber guard and to drill1-1.5" holes in the bumper near the turbo.

Would love to see some pictures if anyone has gone bonzo on their rear bumper.

Prefer not to go fiberglass...that is too blase.

Any ideas anyone or has anyone gone down this path before?

You need to visit the official modified bumpers thread.
I particularly like post 161.

This one is interesting, 934.5.
Sounds like you are headed in this direction.

I agree with billjam...very cool and almost looks like Porsche something from a 959. May go this route. The off center license plate is a winner IMO. I wonder if I can find someone with a water jet cutter.

Cool ideas and links. I still like the white aussie car with slots and the off center plate. Paul...do you think your guy can cut the slots. A water jet would be nice. Minor filing by hand is ok but to cut these out with a drill/ saw seems tedious. I am not opposed to doing it though if I have to.

I don't think I will make Turbopalooza. Just want to get her on the road again with fresh K27 HFS turbo and 993/965 brake upgrades. I will be in my own happypalooza if I accomplish this in July.

Here are the dimensions for the cutouts in my bumper.
I drilled all the red holes 12mm then used a jigsaw to cut out between the holes. Final shaping was with a file, so yes ... tedious.

Also, this arrangement requires Euro bumper rubbers, or none at all. Those horrible, ugly enormous US versions take up too much space.

May as well have a pic as well!

Yes, it is absolutely hideous, shame on you -Porsche.

However, I don't think you have to go back to the 1980's. 1993 would do :

Each man to his own, but for this particular car, there is much more to it than spoilers and bumpers. There is profound pedigree.

Does anyone make the removable center piece like the blue and red 934/5 cars shown above? That would be an option if "readily" available.

Another part of the equation is whether you want any crash protection or not. If someone rearends you, do you want it to FUBAR your motor, too?

Look for pics of the blue Bisimoto car. They've effectively cut out the rear bumper in the center to showcase the turbos.
