964/993 Longblock Strenghts-Weaknesses?
Still looking to build a hotrod 3.6. Which lower end (crank/rods) is recommended and why. I've heard 993 rods may be a weak point. True/false? The 964's lighter crank requires a harmonic balancer. Is this a problem? I can buy a 964 cheaper and apply savings to ITB injection, cams etc. Recommendations, opinions?

check that out, build up of a 3.8, the pieces that were used and why. I am sure some would argue for other parts but its a nice starting point. Have you called up any of the reputable engine builders that are often mentioned here? I would call Henry Schmidt (supertecperformance.com), Steve Weiner (rennsportsystems.com) and Jerry woods to see what they have to see. I think the weak part in the 993 rods are the bolts but not the rods themselves. You can always bolt 964 rods onto a 993 crank cant you? Why not just take either 3.6 mill, put in some hotter cams, higher CR pistons, top it off with ITB's and get a nice DTA or Motex ECU and have fun.

Sorry can't help much. I do know 993 and 964 rods are different at the small end at least. 993 pistons won't fit on 964 rods.

Porschekid, you are clairvoyant! That's exactly what I had in mind. One thing I have to check is whether the set up above will make much more power than a upcammed and reprogrammed Vram. If not, why blow the big $$$. I'll call Schmidt and Weiner to see. Wheatdog |

The vrams also have bigger ports and valves All of this is moot if going w/ DTA or Motec as you will want even bigger valves and ports. All in all any 993 is a better base to start from.
