2.7 Race Motor Case Work

Can someone give me a rundown of the recommended case work (estimates would be great too) for the case work need to build up a 2.7 race motor?

I don't have prices but the list should include:

Install Casesavers on all headstud holes
Install timecert on through stud at intermediate shaft.
Shuffle pin
Align bore
Spot face throughbolt holes.
Clean case and clean out all oil passages.

You should only use a 7R case and if you use a 2.4 case you'll neet to bore out the spigots.

I'm gussing this will cost a minimum of 1500 dollars and probably more like 2000 dollars all together.

This spring I had a 2.7 case resized back to standard (much better than line boring), case inserts, spigots cleaned up and the through holes chamferred on the non-chamfered side by Ollies. Cost around $1000. I don't know how much more it would be for shuffle pinning.

Hi John:

Andy's estimates are darned close,.... I also do the oil bypass modification and have the case parting halves machined flat and the main bearing saddles lined bored back to standard. This ensures a true bore so the crank doesn't bind when everything is torqued up.

We also modify the main bearing oiling, main bearing shells, and cross-drill the crank before all the other preparation on that item.

I spend around $ 1900 for all the necessary case mods for a mag-cased race engine.

Take note than I do not boattail the mains on magnesium cases,...

Thanks. I have an old 2.7 longblock that I've been kicking around as a spare or enduro motor or something. Problem is these damn 2.7's cost too much money to get into good shape.

They resize the case like you'd resize the big end of a connecting rod. Remove material from both case halves and then recut all the bores to standard size.

Steve rennsport, What machine did they use to machine the parting surfaces? Fly cut /lap?
And how many machine shops can do work on Porsche engines? I'm trying to find out if setting up a small shop would be worth it. I'm near Seattle wa.

They use a very large surface grinder to machine the case halves.

IMHO, VERY few machine shops do quality work on 911 motors although quite a number do this sort of work,...

We do everything in house except for this particular operation to control quality and production schedules.
