Twin plug options/costs, what are you using
I am planing rebuild of a 78 3.0 to a 3.2ss( max moritz) with twin plugs and cis
the option i prefer is a Burn Bros distributor rebuild for 1700 then there is Electromotive sys for 1000-1500 but ....What other options/costs are there? thanks steve |

As you can see, the Gerry Woods conversions is very similar to all the conversion distributors of the past. The Andial, Aase motors, Woods and Burn_Bros Gen I all use an adapter that attaches the cap to the distributor body but neglects the concern for rotor support.
Both the Marrelli and Bosch twin distributors took notice of the rotating mass of the twin plug rotor and decided that an extra bearing was necessary for reliability and stability. Aaron Burnham (Burn_Bros) carried the twin plug conversion to it's next logical progression. Add a support bearing. Recently Gerry Woods working together with Aaron have modified the BB distributor design to make it even better. The design modification is minor but may prove to reduce the cost of manufacturing. Don't be surprised to see the Woods distributors convert to the more appropriate design in future iterations. ![]()

I use the JB racing 12 plug distributor in my car with twin digital 6 boxes and twin HVC coils with an Accel Gen7 system running the show.

In this era of technology, why not go to a distributor-less system?
A coil-on-plug system has to be coming down in price, almost every car company has at least one model using it. The electronic packages to run them are small and very efficient and can be hidden away in places that we would not usually look. Just my thinking . Bob

I think there are some that have gone this way, but you need the cam and crankposition sensors and then a brain to control it. I think the guys that go this way go with Motec or the electromotive systems. I don't think there are bolt on systems that are very affordable. If I'm wrong, someone please tell me.

Sorry Henry...did not want to agitate anyone....was just thinking along the lines of simplifying the engine for visual purposes.
My 69 has the original points and coil system. One thing for sure...if I have a problem on the road, points and coil can be checked out, whereas an electronic system of any kind (pointless...amplifiers...etc) cannot. I do like the look of a coil-on-plug system for clean lines and almost invisible ignition. I guess I should confess that I have modified my 3 pin box for more reliability...stronger diodes...higher current SCR...etc. Bob

I have one foot in each camp...the 1971 with a 3-litre runs a system similar to Strokhers. JB Racing dizzy, twin MSD6A boxes and twin Blaster 2 coils. Total cost without plug wires $1700.
I used to run the same megasquirt/ford edis system in Steve's. Total cost without wires, $500. The race car now has a 36-1 ford edis wheel on the crank, with Adaptronic ECU, twin Haltech triple-channel ignitors and twin Accell wasted spark coil towers. Total cost ~$1500 with the ECU (and you get EFI, knock sensing, logging, etc with it) Depends what you want. If you want the megasquirt and ford/edis route I have that setup for sale. It wasnt "retro" enough for the 1971 and it wasnt fully featured enough to drive the race car.

FWIW, I'm about to use a 964/993 twin distributor ($350), 964 Ignition leads ($200) a 2nd Crane HI-6 ignition system with coil ($400).
This is for my blown 3.2 Carrera Motronic motor (well, 3.3 now), which was twin-plugged prep'd when I had the 930 P&C's slipped in ![]()

VW / Audi coil-on-plug, fits very nicely! But you will need to have an aftermarket EFI.

I have a JB Racing dizzy with duel MSD's in my SC.
So far it has worked well, plus it gives a bit of that Porsche bling to the engine. ![]()
