TPC has a number of turbocharged Caymans out there making 375ft-lbs of torque and I haven't heard of any breaking yet.

Very interesting project. Hope it turns out well for you Blue, just make sure your brain doesn't overheat with all the figuring, calculating and pondering. It seems like a lot of fun, though!

Then why did Steve mention this:

The G50 6-speed is FAR stronger, especially a late Cup or RSR version.

I wish I knew the real answer. I know of some hot-rodded caymans out there run hard on the track that haven't yet broken, but then again sometimes it takes some time for a trans to destroy itself.

We have caymans running mid 450s at the wheels for over 50k miles w/0 issues... these include 1/4 mile runs... Axels are a different story(at least for 1 client)

johnmann,
Not all experts agree on all things. His statement that a GT3 gearbox is stronger is absolutely true. But it doesn't make the Cayman boxes a POS.

As for durability? The Caymans we sponsor in Grand Am in the Continental Tire races made it a whole season this year without needing a gearbox rebuild. I think it'a a good little box. If it wasn't, it wouldn't also be the basis for certain turbo-charged Audi applications as well.

Hi Mark,
No, this didn't get resolved unfortunately. I was looking at a 956 gearbox for sale but the seller wouldn't lower his price to a reasonable level so I thought the idea was out of my league really.

Wayne has a spare 962 engine for sale- seriously. I saw it at the LA lit show/swap meet. Maybe he has a trans for a fair price, or knows where to get one.

Im still not understanding why you would do any of this on a street car. You will never blow up that stock tranny driving on the street, nor will you test the limits of the stock engine... if you do... youll probably be in jail... You are also destroying the resale value of that Cayman. you could just get the car you want and call it a day. Between the price of a Cayman, the lost resale value, and the cost of all these upgrades, you could just buy a what you are looking for... unless this is just for fun...

Caymans are still pretty pricey used for doing a conversion like this. If this is a low mileage clean car, you could do pretty well by just selling it. Doing an upside down trans and non-stock engine in a car like like this will make it virtually unsellable. In 20 years it might be a different story... There are alot less caymans out there than boxsters. So yes... lost resale value...
