help can't find the serial number

we just bout a sand rail with a Porsche motor in it. we were told that it was a 911, 3.0 Lt. but i can't find the numbers to look it up. we pulled the fan and alternator, distributor, and the little triangle heat shields on the left and right of the alternator.
we have looked all over the motor and just cant even find a block number. any help will be great. here is a pic of what the motor looks like, hope that someone will recognize the layout of it and be able to tell me where to look.
thanks in advance for the help!

Engine serial number.......

The engine serial number for 911 is located some where below and right side of the alternator fan housing. Somewhere between 4 and 5 o'clock position. Just behind the alternator belt shown in your picture. Post another picture of the engine with the correct orientation for easy viewing. That would help too.

The S/N is found on the RHS of the alternator stand as shown in these pics.

If the engine were from a 914-6, the S/N would be on the top of the case next to the breather cover.

What would that fan, crank pulley and coil be off of then? That is what I need to find out.

The fan pulley is too small for an SC, its an early car fan and pulley, pre 77. The fan you want has 12 small holes in groups of 3 where the large holes in the fan are. The combination of pulley and proper fan supplies more air to the cylinders.
The coil that matches the Permatune CD box in the picture is a Bosch that the part number on the end of the coil ends in 001. Visually the Bosch coil is 2/3 the size of the one in the picture.
You need better pictures of the right side of the fan in that whole area.

You have a good photo of the area where the serial # should be. Since it is not there, you must have an un-numbered replacement case. So, what you have there can only be determined by a full strip-down, and each part identified.

Check the area on top of the case between the breather cover and the T-Stat for a 914-6 serial number and type number as shown below.

Okay, so the 7R at the end identifies it as the last incarnation of the magnesium case and was introduced in the latter half of 1973 as a 2.4. It was better known as the case for the 2.7, and was the strongest of the magnesium cases. I suppose it is possible it was built as a 3.0, but as I said before only a teardown will identify what you really have.

I have a 964 engine that was purchased directly from Porsche and never installed in a 964. It has no s/n. I was surprised when I bought it (from original owner) about the lack of s/n, but the story from the original owner seemed totally logical. I asked around at the time and everyone seemed ok with the story, though no one could confirm definately that Porsche sends engines without s/n.

Is this motor out of a Porsche 911 2.0L/2.2L?

From the pictures, Hmmmm? Just wondering.
