930LDR,
Nice work, the spun bearing makes sense at idle, my guess is oil pressure was a bit low at idle and got it. I would replace that rod regardless to how it checks out. How is the crank? Looks like you will need a piston now for sure.

What... don't think that can be cleaned up? Fortunately this was one of the pistons that had damage on the surface anyways. I may end up replacing the whole set and going 3.4L since there are a couple more less than perfect pistons in the lot.

Keep the piston and rod and mount it on a wooden base and hang it in your garage as a subtle reminder of the cost of speed!

As I'm looking at P&C options... any thoughts or recommendations on staying 3.3L or going 3.4L (or 3.5L)?

I read once that a good reason to go to 3.4L jugs & slugs is cuz the aftermarket cylinders run cooler due to a different fin arrangement then the OEMs, but I don't have 1st hand knowledge if it's true or not. Also, if you go larger then 3.4L then you have to bore out the case some to make room for the larger slugs.

Great job getting that piston off. I am sorry I missed the point that the engine seized. I thought it was free and then was stuck after you put the top-end off.
Can you cut the remainder of that piston in half so we can get a measurement on the crown thickness? This is important for those who want to cut valve pockets in stock pistons. Thanks.

Well, I stand informed - a spun bearing under minimal load. Does that mean we should thrash them more regular?
I guess you had no other option. I cant see what else you could do, altho there have been many spun 930 bearings before. I guess it depends where the crank stopped and you drew the short straw. Alan

Sorry... been off for a while on business...
Jamie - Don't mind cutting the piston and taking some measurements for you. Alan - Definitely drew the short straw although a couple of the pistons had some detonation damage (including this one) so it would have needed to be replaced anyways...
