I like to at least keep the oil ring gap towards the cylinder top, not sure if it really helps over full engine cases with oil from getting into the cylinder when sitting but what the hell.

Yes. Both Wayne's book and JE recommendations agree on that one. So that's what I'm doing too.

Gaining momentum. Pistons in cylinders. Next deck height check.

This tool made it easy.

Also got heads back from machine shop yesterday. Cams should be back next week.

Looking good!

arbita1 09-10-2016 03:03 PM

Thanks.

Tried to do the deck height check but having trouble with the JE piston circlips.

Finally got the circlip in. Not fun. What is it going to be like doing the other side on the motor.

I think I'm good with deck height. Did the check.

Came up with an average of 1.44mm. The one on the higher dome side squished more than the other side.

I went to do my first circlips last night too..
Even with the stomski circlip tool, these clips are really springy and difficult to get seated in the tool. To me, it seems that without a circlip injection tool, it would be near impossibly to get them in without scratching pistons etc...(speaking as an amateur)

The JE clips are thicker and difficult to install. I've fabricated this tool. I have to hit the back of the socket extension with a hammer to get the clips in their seats. So far it's working pretty well.

Still working on the right side p&c install. This side seems to be giving me more trouble. Currently on no.5.

Looking ahead at the next chapter in the book it talks about pre assembling to measure valve to piston clearance. My question is do I really need to do this if I am rebuilding a stock engine. Only changes are the JE pistons and a slightly more aggressive cam. (One step below 964 profile.) thoughts?

Yes you need to measure it.
Your engine is not stock anymore, you've changed the pistons and cams, both will change the clearance values.
And even with the same components, it's some kind of quality control for your cam timing, so it doesn't hurt to measure it.

I finally got the second circlip on cylinder no 5 but it was a bitter sweet victory. In doing so the cylinder moved up a bit and the bottom oil ring slipped out. My compressor is the type that you have the put the piston in on a bench. Any other ideas to compress this without buying another compressor or removing the piston and cylinder?

GIANT hose clamp?

fyi, I have actually pulled all mine dow again, since I was not happy with my circlip fitting in my pistons.

How did you get your circlips in?

Yes. I saw someone else installed rings using a hose clamp. Going to pick one up and try that.

Look above. There's a photo of the tool I made using 3/4" copper pipe and a 14mm socket with an extension.

Yea, those JE circlips are a beeach. I bent one, had to order a replacement.

I had another one that at first seemed to go in, but was not fully seated in the groove. Good thing I noticed.

That worked. Kind of a pain to get the rings all in there. But it worked well once you do.

So if I'm assembling to measure only. Do I install the cylinder head gaskets or leave them out? My thought is to install them as I should not have to remove the heads if every thing checks out. Am I missing something ?
