Hello everyone and Merry Christmas. I just wanted to share with you a couple of photos of some crazy weather we're having here. Forgive the sub-standard pic quality, they were taken with my ultra turbo 2Mpx phone camera:

So couple of weeks ago the temperatures were well in the 10 C (50 F) range, but winter was knocking on the door and in just a week's time the temperatures dropped to -15 C (5 F) and it snowed. In 2 days it snowed 20 cm (8") of snow:

21.12.2009.

2 days later the temperatures shot back up to around 0 C (32 F) and the rain started melting the snow:

23.12.2009.

2 more days later. It rained all night. It's Christmas morning and the outside temp. gauge is showing 19 C (66 F):

25.12.2009.

To sum it up, first the temperatures dropped by 25 K in 3-4 days, then they shot back up by 35 K in 4 days time.

LOL!!!

Last year my oldest son got married on the 27th, yeah, great time of the year for a wedding! (Waterloo, Iowa) It was a full blown blizzard at the time, the Best Man nearly did not arrive due to roads being impassable. Fast Forward to 2009. It has been between 35F-39F for almost 3 days, rained continuously for 2 days, almost all of the snow is gone and this afternoon it is supposed to drop down below freezing and start snowing again, with a wind of course!

BTW: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We have certified meteorologists (with college degrees&stuff) standing in front of the map. Sadly, none of them are pretty women.

I had to do a double-take on that one, ck. At first it looked like a rocky shoreline. Lovely pic! Now I think I need to go turn the heat up.

CK-

Excellent! Where?

The problem with your photos, they make me want to chuck my camera out the window and give up trying. If I did that everytime I saw one, the pile outside would reach the window sill.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

New years eve my wife and I had an offer too good to refuse, get picked up at our door, driven into the city centre of Sydney to enjoy the fireworks and a barbeque 50 floors up. No fighting the hundreds of thousands of people swarming over every normal vantage point and since we would be driven home afterwards we could also enjoy a few drinks in the clouds as well.
It was a good photo opportunity so I took along my Nikon D90, unfortunately I did not have my tripod handy so I had to make do with a monopod when it got dark. This meant I had to keep the shutter speed up at 1/15th at 3200iso to have any chance of sharp shots in a windy environment even with the very effective stabilised lens. This combined with high humidity, low cloud and smoke did not lend its self to the best quality shots, although results are much better than I could have achieved with my old D40.

Looking west towards the Blue Mountains where I live.

Looking north east towards the harbour entrance.

Looking east towards the Pacific ocean and the famous Bondi beach.

Looking south east.

Looking south towards the air port

Looking south west.

The naval dock at centre and many private boats in the harbour waiting for the fireworks.
Entrance to harbour at top left of centre.

The Sydney harbour bridge with many thousands of people at its base waiting for mid night.

Darling harbour with people gathering.

West over Darling harbour.

Just after sun set.

A brief fireworks test at sun set under low cloud

There were two full fireworks sessions, one at 9PM so the kids could see it and be taken home at a reasonable hour and another at midnight

The harbour bridge explodes

The top of a building is not the ideal spot to view this fireworks display but it sure has its advantages, Sydney harbour is spectacular.

What a great location! Good pictures as well, especially since you didn't have a tripod. We usually go to the rooftop of the tallest building in Paddington for new years eve fireworks pictures, but decided to stay at home this year. I was sorry after seeing the midnight show on tv.

Wow, i can totally see my old house, 55 Crown St in Wooloomooloo in those shots, great spot! I was out on one of the headlands for new years in 2005, it was without a doubt the best firework show of my life, those guys in Sydney have it taken to a whole nother level!
