rount5, I modeled a set of RD Barbacks and stuck them on the triple clamp so you can get an idea of what they might look like.

Scott, thanks for putting that together! I was originally going to go with the clear but that black is starting to grow on me. I've got an '04 BCR and think either would look good. If I decided to go with the black what would be the best way to get my barbacks done?
Also I'll be going out of town next week so let me know if you'd like my payment this week or when I return around 9/28.

I'm having some serious lust going on here.
But unless I get out the 7/11 credit card (.357 mag version) and make a few withdraws, it's not gonna happen for me. ![]() |

rount5, don't let the computer drawings sway you one way or the other as far as color goes. They really don't accurately represent the final finish in either black or clear. I will try to dig up some pics of actual finishes for you to look over. Even then, photos can be decieving too. In general though I have to say the clear finish looks closest to what a factory finish would be.
Bill, give yourself a couple weeks to plan the bank job and maybe you can get yourself a set. ![]()

the bar backs look nice, but why? why wouldnt you just do a handlebar, and be done with it? you take those gorgeous clamps and put that barback on there and then the handlebar, its gonna look terrible. just do a complete handlebar ala R12...

Please count me in for a clear anodized set and a pair of the caps. Where do I send the check?

ama, I sent you a PM with the info, thanks.
shreddr, I aggree it is a shame to bulk up these clamps with big pieces like that but I am just trying to accomodate people that already have them. I have a couple other ideas I may try out but I would rather not bother if people are satisfied with the available options. Thank goodness I am comfortable with my bars low mounted in the stock position and don't have to deal with these issues on my own bike.

Scott, do you have a minimum requirement for the clamps, or are you going to go ahead after two weeks regardless of the amount? (seeing that we only have 4 committed ones so far)

tm, there is a 10 set minimum order for the triple clamps to get this price break. I will most likely start a production run of 15 or so sets when we get to ten orders. I would like to give the full two weeks time to see if more people come on board but if it stays just under ten sets at two weeks I will go ahead with a short 10 set run of parts anyway and call it a day.
Also, I want to be clear about the free ignition and ball joint swap I am offering with these clamp sets. There are some specialty tools and fixtures that are required to do this part of the installation that I already have and am offering to do this part of the job for you. All you have to do is remove your stock clamp assemblies from the bike and ship them to me. You can use USPS Flat Rate Box shipping that only costs around $10 or $17 with $500 insurance. It takes only a couple days to reach me and I can have them back in the mail the same day. Save yourself the hassle of this step for only $17 and 4-5 days wait. I return ship everything back to you for no extra charge.

Well, that takes at minimum 2 weeks for me, so I will do it myself, but I'd say highly recommended for any US orders.

Yes, excatly tm. It is difficult enough getting the package delivered one direction overseas. I will email you the installation intructions so you can get an idea of what you will need to do everything yourself.

more photos
Scott,
Can you post cad pics of the underside of the top and bottom clamps? I was just wondering how solid the clamps are. It seemed like the original top clamps, EVO1 were solid not sure about EVO2 & EVO3. Thanks, Brandon

Brandon, I appreciate your curiousity but let me assure you these clamps are as stiff as they need to be. I have had a few machinists approach me for my drawings and by posting the underside for all to see it is practically giving away what ever small amount of exclusivity I have on these things. Not a big deal I suppose since no one else is going to make any money on them either, but I just don't feel comfortable baring all on the internet at this point. I guess it's just a built in paranoia I've developed being in the design business where patents and intellectual property is something to protect. Not excatly the same thing in this case but being a mechanical engineer and CAD designer I know a few pics is all I would need to make my own parts.
I have done lots of testing with various designs and tried taking material off some of them to see where the limit to performance was. It turns out that about three times the strength of the stock clamps is just right. Anything more than that is just going to add weight. Anything less than twice the strength of the stock clamps is insufficient for the kind of performance gains I was looking for. V2 & V3 clamps are both optimized at just under 3.0 times the strength (1/3 the deflection under the same loading) of the stock clamps and V1 is about a factor of 2.75 which works fine too. Don't sweat it, they work great.

3 times the (torsional?) strength over stock?
![]() What's stock designed for, display purposes only?

Hey Scott,
Sorry not trying to give you the thrid degree. I am sure they are as great if not better than they are claimed to be. By the way they all look awesome! You have tons of awesome feedback from your first two clamps. I was just getting excited about having my own set. Just curiousity being a mechanical engineer myself. I guess I will have all my questions answered when I have a set for myself and I cant wait for them. Thanks again for designing these great clamps and making them available to all up pelicans. Brandon

Bulky old Backs
....those look real close Scott.
If you want the actual model I can send to ya. One , thing, the screw heads face inboard, so you have left and right swapped. ![]() p.s. ...IMHO despite how anally charged one might be, creating an R12-type clamp will create more cost/time/confusion for Scott and make your bars once again non-adjustable. However I have faith in Scotty Waddy's design talents.

BrandonS, no problem. I didn't mean to bust yer balls either. I guess I just recognized engineer/machinist questions in your in your comments and became a little nervous. I probably already gave you enough info to make your own then.
![]() I modeled the stock clamps and applied a simple torsional loading on the computer model and recorded the deflection data. With the same load and test setup I compared this deflection to the first prototype clamp which gave me roughly 1/3 the deflection of stock modeled clamp. The prototype clamps worked so well it appeared they might be overbuilt for the job so I had the first V2 top clamps lightened. In actual testing on the bike they did not perform nearly as well as the prototype setup. Using this "on bike" testing info I was able to find the right range of deflection required for the computer models. tm, when you take off the stock clamps and compare them to the new ones you will see the difference both visually and in the way the bike feels. To my surprise as well as others, the decreased deflection in the new clamps is noticed immediately in a much more precise feel to the front end. The improvement is easily felt at a slow to normal pace and just gets better the harder you push the bike. The top clamp is about 4 ounces heavier than stock and the lower is more like 6 ounces more. When you see and feel the difference you will not even want the stockers for display purposes. For some reason the stock R1100S clamps are probably the weakest of all the R1100 bikes. Just an oversight I guess, but fixed now. Chris, thanks for your always enthusiastic support from my first UK triple clamp owner. Got a couple more on the list now, thanks. How is Gus's bike coming along? Did he ever complete it? I really liked how he mounted the battery. That could really help with lowering the cg. Cool ideas. RD, I will make the swap. If they look close then that's all I needed. It is just for a rough visual anyway. Thanks.
