Just saw that too - they are worried about a big one between Beachworth and Myrtleford. Seems while others are out of control - they are looking reasonable. Talk of 100 fires yesterday.
More dead than Ash Wednesday. Some are calling it Red Saturday. 3000 - 3500 Firefighters are on the job, the majority are volunteers, one who lost his wife and child while he was fighting the fire in the town. People talking about it raining fire, got so dark that solar lights were coming on. Some firefighters watching a front come through said that they could hear the trees exploding in a nearby pine plantation - then they knew they had to move. Sounds like NSW is copping it too Kev. And further North in Queensland - there is mass flooding... Crazy! |

Pity I don't live in Melbourne. Maybe a Melbournite or two might make it down there.
Just got this email - it would be nice to get a couple of Autographs. ![]() Unique opportunity to meet and greet WSBK racers Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus BMW Motorrad offers World Superbike fans the unique opportunity to chat with Australia’s own Troy Corser and his Spanish team-mate Ruben Xaus in Melbourne just days ahead of the opening round of the 2009 WSKB Championship at Phillip Island. Corser and Xaus will be appearing at Southbank Motorcycles in the heart of Melbourne (130 City Road, Southbank) from 6.30pm - 8.00pm on 24 February, to chat about their pre-season testing on the new BMW S 1000 RR superbike racer which makes its competition debut at the Island the following weekend. Not only is it the debut of the new race bike, but it marks the return of the famous BMW roundel to the pinnacle of production bike racing at World Championship level. Both Corser and Xaus are extremely talented and experienced riders and their pre-season form in practice on the brand new machine with the brand new team has been incredibly encouraging. That sounds like a good chance to hang with some other, run-of-the-mill BMW riders!
This just in; Bayliss was recently in Rome and was asked his opinion about the winner of the 09 WSBK title. And Troy Boy tipped it as a contest between Haga and ... (drum roll) Spies! No doubt, Texas has skills. He learns tracks quickly. The new Yammer looks to have potential. But this is a big call; Bayliss is exceptionally astute at summing up the 'opposition', and he obviously knows Xerox Ducati in and out. I maintain that this is going to be the year of years in Superbike racing. Not long now...

I'm with Branners. This is going to be killer. I have enormous respect for Spies. He's amazingly tough and strong willed. I've seen him at a number of regional races back before he was a big name, and a couple times when he came back to our club for the regionals as a bit of a ringer on some old friends' teams, and what he can do with even an average-ish bike is astonishing.
He's also amazing at learning new tracks. Still, a first year championship is a LOT to ask for. But as you said, Bayliss knows the duc team and how to eval a rider, so his endorsement carries a lot more weight that my little opinion. He has a chance, but to win against a tough guy like Haga on what is probably the bike-and-team to beat, is an astonishing act. That battle, and maybe Byrne, and just seeing what the beemers can do should make it fun. The two surprises, to me anyway, in off season testing, have been how well Byrne and Spies have done, and that an Aprilia mounted Biaggi is behind a Xaus mounted Beemer. Pretty cool!

Cool assuming I am not away with work I will go to this . I once went to a race school where Corser was one of the instructors , but since that was 1993 I doubt he will remember it as well as I do.

I reckon Spies will be near the top in the first race and in contention for the title for the season. The 'long bang' engine that Yamaha have is getting good reviews and Spies seems like the type to learn a new track quickly.

Where it gets complicated, look at all the names mentioned and they've all got a chance,no one has even mentioned Checa and Jonathan Rea,and they are both capable of getting on the podium,i've seen Rea many times and he's good(very),never mind Neukerchner,Kagayama(particulary at Brno) and another fly in the soup,Fabrizio,he lay down and played second fiddle to Bayliss, you can bet your life he won't do that with Haga.
