If we replace the battery with one of the exact same specs, would we still need to register the new battery or will the charge cycle etc. be the same?

Yes. registration has to do with age of battery as well as size.

But it is only needed if your car has the Intelligent Battery Sensor. IBS cars have a plastic "box" on the battery ground cable, as shown in the following image:
