Has foul play been ruled out yet? The "distraught" wife, when interviewed, seemed to plant the seed of possible suicide.....hmmmmm......how can you booby trap an accelerator cable to go full steam and then stay stuck in the on position (and disable the airbags) ?

I posted this earlier only seeing the inaccurate local news caption....saying it was an off duty officer who was killed and yesterday afternoon....all not true. I recognized "the area" as I used to live near there years ago (Buck Jones Rd, Jones-Franklin)....when I heard the speed and general location. Just inexplicable, insane speed for someone on Wade Ave in Raleigh afternoon traffic...

You know I've had this recurring nightmare that no one knows how to turn off a modern "push to start" car when it's moving. I had to show my mom how to do it.





I wonder maybe- just maybe- some of these accidents like this one and others, like the ones where you hear someone frantically calling 911 about "My Car won't stop!!!!" etc. just don't know how to turn off a modern push-to-start car when it's in motion. Do you know how?

The runaway BMW story in post 23 makes exactly zero sense. He could have simply turned off the key. Or applied the brakes. Or both.

The 911 going 150 on an exit ramp also makes zero sense. This is not someone having fun. And the cops quoting a dollar figure on the crashed car... wtf did they do? Call PCNA from the accident site and request the MSRP of the crashed heap?

Maybe a local will correct me...but at 3 pm on a Thursday....and the location. Sounds as if he just left work near his hospital, and is on a busy Raleigh (Wade Ave) street going 150 to ENTER onto one of the I-40 beltways...crazy

That’s my point. There is no key to turn. For at least 10 years now.


Anyway, push the button and hold it for 5 seconds, and the car turns off.

Seriously, how many push-to start cars are there now? Most of them. Nobody knows. Sure, rarely useful but possibly very important.

Sad and tragic incident. Doesn't matter that the victim was driving near 150 mph in a Porsche. Could have been doing 40 in a Yugo for that matter. A wife has lost her husband and their 2 young children have lost their father. My condolences to those affected by this tragedy.

I agree...very tragic. The "why" of it is pure speculation on our part. Sadly, the results aren't.

Sorry, unless you have some type of vascular/cardiac anomaly- like an ASD- a clot can not go from your leg to your brain. With normal anatomy all blood from the legs is filtered through the lungs before heading to your other organs. I certainly do not know what happened, but clots from the leg do not normally go to the brain. Plus, if it did- most people do not recover.

Gogar, one touch power on and hold to turn off devices have been around for a long time, from ipod's, laptops, etc.

For some one like me in a younger generation to hold the start button off is intuitive interface.

I have had an object sticking my throttle pedal in the Jaguar, I did not know it was an object and thought it was a throttle by wire issue. I panicked and held down the start button to shut the car off.

I should have cleared the object from under the gas pedal instead.

Agreed. There's more to the story than just an accident.

Also, at 150 MPH there aren't enough airbags to save you. The impact not only separated the engine from the car, it also separated the gearbox from the engine. At some point physics take over.
