Richard Rawlings in a Hellcat...

Skip the first minute...

Don't start your drag race doing a burnout.

The 'sport' of accelerating in a straight line quickly?

Navy pilots do it better.
And that's before their first cup of coffee.
Then they do so much more...

So he bought a small printing company, that didn't work out.
So he opened a small garage called gas monkey, that was doing OK because the guy he partnered up with was really good. Until he got fed up and quit.

One of his wealthy friends made a bet he and Richard couldn't break the record for the cannonball run. They did, but some people dispute that. That's his 15 minutes.

His shop occasionally sponsors DBs like Alex Laff-lin.
If Richard is the ultimate douche (and he is), Alex is running a close second. When he gets beat (often) he throws a temper tantrum and runs overhis opponent's chutes in the shut-off lane.
Royal douche.
Rawlings tried sponsoring a top fuel dragster but AFAIK it never qualified for a race.

Don't bother watching it. It's a "crash" in much the same way that a kiddie pool in the backyard is a body of water.

Don Garlits raced an F-14 on a steam catapult back in the day and won. Just sayin'.

Mr Garlits did about 4Gs for a few seconds.
Oh my.
But his challenger went on to pull sustained 9Gs in a full-on fight to the death while calculating time to lock-on, and every combination of opponent maneuvers, watching stall speed and radar and other instruments, co-coordinating with communications protocol, analyzing advantages vs disadvantages while also investigating other potential threats on the horizon.

So did Joe Amato. Something like 20 years ago. Even that long ago, had it been on a carrier deck, his car would have already been about 20 feet underwater before the F14 even cleared the deck. It ain't even close...

I find the lower classes of drag racing to be about as exciting to watch as golf. Top Fuel and Funny Car are a whole different story. Any true gear head owes it to themselves to see it live - TV just cannot do it justice.

I can't imagine anything a human can sit in (maybe a rocket sled) that can accelerate faster than a top fuel dragster. When they go a 1/4 mile. 3.58 seconds at 386.26 mph (621.61 km/h) was set by Sammy Miller in his Vanishing Point funny car in July 1984!

So fast they changed the rules to slow em down. 386 MPH after less than 4 seconds is nucking futz.

I would love to have a ride in something like what Major Roger J. Smith, U.S. Air Force had: From brake release at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota, at 913 feet (278 meters) above Sea Level, the F-15 reached 30,000 meters (98,425 feet) in 3 minutes, 27.799 seconds. WOW!

You are comparing apples and oranges. While indeed no one is shooting at them, the hazards a Top Fuel or Funny Car driver face on every run vastly exceed those faced by any fighter pilot.

No catapult to launch him, just thrust!
