The fascia was covered with aluminum so I didn't know what I'd find but luckily it was a big fat 2x6. Some houses around here don't have a fascia at all, just the ends of the roof framing so I was glad to see it. There was nothing wet or rotten so that was good too.

Next thing was to open up the wall by removing the lap siding and expose the corner studs where my new wall will connect. It was ugly. Rotten wood and spider webs. The house built in 1956 so not a big surprise.

The siding is cedar which is nice but I doubt if I'll be able to reuse it. I'll go back with hardyboard cement siding.

I pissed off this guy who seems to have been the dude making the webs. He must have been 1-1/2" across. He made his last web yesterday.

So I cut out the rotten studs and cleaned it all up. I also made a run to the lumber yard and bought the material for the first few walls. Also bought this, 6' rolling Baker scaffold. Bought it at Northern Tool. It was on sale plus I had a $20 coupon. Got it for $139.00 plus tax. A great deal and so much easier/safer than working off a ladder.

The plan is to frame the walls during the days I'm taking off for Christmas. More updates in a few weeks.

Well Trump can't get his wall built but I sure can!

The weather has been nice and I've been able to get some walls stood up. The first section needed me to notch the existing roof to get it to meet the corner stud.

The first section was 14' long and I stood it up by myself. Me strong like Bull!
Second section was only 6' so it was easy.

I bought myself a new hammer for Christmas. On sale for $11.00 at Lowe's. I couldn't pass it up. Now I have 4 framing hammers. This one has a larger head so I don't miss the nail head as much. Wife said it was the senior's model

The Engineer spec'd Simpson threaded inserts and epoxy that I can't find locally so I had to order it on-line. I don't want to deviate from the spec's because I don't know this inspector so I'm not risking it. Some of the details are a bit overboard IMHO such as each stud gets 2 nails from the bottom of the plate and 3 toe nailed from the top side of plate. PLUS threaded rods on 48" centers from the concrete up through the top plate. We have Hurricane Andrew and the others to thank for this.

The ceiling height is right at 10'. I could only match the existing and not have the addition's roof higher than the house. Building department requirement.

I'm happy with the progress thus far. The 2x4 studs are the same size as they were in 1986 but I seem to have grown.

Put me in the same camp as those hoping to do something similar down the road.

I have a side yard that would be suitable, too. I'll have to look into the permitting stuff. I have a couple architect friends to give advice too.

If possible I would like to see a few pics of the Simpson threaded inserts and epoxy detail, please.

You got that right. Last night we got 1/2" of rain....today it's a lake.

Be sure to speak to a architect or engineer that knows residential wood framed construction. I work with commercial const. A/E's everyday and they were clueless when I was speaking to them about what I was doing.

Thank you! Yes, my guys are well versed in residential. They can do it all, pretty much.

A 1/2 " ? That's sissy rain we got 6 " yesterday/last night ! We are on Pace for record rainfall for the month . Stay dry and keep swinging that hammer .
