It only had an affect on who finished 3rd and 4th. To totally disqualify the clear winner of The Derby because he may have affected the 3rd and 4th place horse is BS. If they are going to start enforcing technicalities to determine the winner, every aggrieved owner will file disputes from here on out, knowing they now have a chance to improve their position based on this first in history precedent. There was a LOT of bumping at the start too (as usual) - will that be a basis for a penalty next year? Probably.
If Maximum Security had been trained by their favorite Bob Baffert, the stewards wouldn't have even bothered to look at the videos. Last edited by CurtEgerer; 05-05-2019 at 05:44 AM.. |

And it wasn’t the stewards that initiated the reconsideration. Nor was it the two affected riders. Seems an opportunistic play by the second place team to steal the win from the faster horse. Unfortunately it worked.
I’d guess if you go back and watch the last ten Kentucky Derby’s, you’d see much worse. This was a bad call. My opinion.

Since I grew up working horses, I worked as a swing groom for a known horse trainer my senior year in HS in Aiken, SC - a big winter training ground for Thoroughbreds - when we moved there. I also worked a winter grooming when I was chasing the baseball dream. I know the sons of a lot of well know trainers, jockeys (flat and Steeplechase) from that era. I called one after the race. "Good call", was his answer. He also mentioned that the initial winning jockey brought up the potential interference when we was being interviewed while still mounted. Given the financial stakes, this is far from over - the owner and trainer have mentioned a follow-on protest. If you folks have never been to a flat race/Steeplechase, do it. The power of these animals in full flight is wondrous to behold in person.

I know nothing about horse racing but as soon as we saw it I told me wife that a horse swerving outside like that seemed questionable. He cut off another horse and that isn't legal...it is considered dangerous. You can't concern yourself with the fact of what horses were affected because that would turn it into the NBA. Guy hits player on the wrist but the fouler is a star, playing at home and it's in the 4th quarter...so no call. But if it was on the road in the 1st quarter then we'll call it. The winner cut off two other horses, those horses had to pull up and that isn't legal. Glad they had the guts to call a foul a foul. If they don't call it when everyone knows it's a foul (announcer even said so) then you open a can a worms and conspiracy theories.

https://www.aol.com/article/news/2019/05/05/maximum-security-co-owner-weighs-options-after-derby-disqualification/23721900/
Kentucky Horse Racing Commission chief steward Barbara Borden said the riders of Long Range Toddy and Country House lodged objections against Maximum Security for interference. "We had a lengthy review of the race," Borden said. "We interviewed affected riders. We determined that (Maximum Security) drifted out and impacted the progress of War of Will, in turn interfering with the 18 and 21. Those horses were all affected by the interference." Friday's Kentucky Oaks for fillies began with a scary spill at the start by Positive Spirit that dumped rider Manny Franco. Neither the horse nor rider was injured, and both walked off the track. Serengeti Empress won the race in her first start since pulling up early in March at Fair Grounds with external bleeding. The incidents come soon after the industry enacted a raft of medication and safety rules changes following the deaths of 23 horses over three months at California's Santa Anita. |

The way Maximum Security blocked the field by moving three lanes to the right and then diving back to the rail made me wonder........When did Max Verstappen become a jockey?

Wow and Wow what an amazing picture. Don't know horse racing at all, but if it was a legitimate call, no matter how old a rule, its just too bad. For the nag that got the boot.

Bets were paid on final official result.
It won't be overturned. Two owners filed a protest. All three judges were in agreement. . Thie is not the first time a horse has been disqualified in a horse race. |

Too much money at stake. That seems to be the underlying problem with most sports these days. Pretty much takes the "sport" out of much of it.

Any kind of competition with horses, Steeple, racing, jupings, etc etc is about the ego of the owners or gambling business.. It's never about the horse being put first in the decisions.. So to hell with it..it's a racket.
