I work in medicine, and I would say that there are certainly stupid questions. Questions for which you should already know the answers. Whether you're a student and the answer was already covered in the reading/lecture, or as a practitioner and the answer is something you should already have looked up but were too lazy to have done so. (Patients/families are allowed to ask anything, as they're assumed to have no medical knowledge.)

If the question is posed as a "Just to clarify" it's probably excusable.

In a slightly different context, I've worked at places which have company-wide all-hands meetings. Stupid questions get asked by people who already know the answer to their own question just so the upper management get to hear the name of the person asking the question. A popular brown nosing technique.

I'd like to think the person answering the question is intelligent enough see straight through this ruse and views the person for the idiot they are. Unfortunately this is probably not the case.

Long time ago in another life when I was a junior QA engineer: "How many bugs do you think we missed this month"...

Me: .........

Thinking: well if I knew that we'd have found them....

Did you not see the bambi thread? (Post #4, Tobra's solution.) Coffee exit = solution.

Will somebody please kill bambi?

I've seen this nonsense many, many times. Also, some people just like to hear themselves talk and will take any opportunity to speak up in a group...even if it's to say something really lame.

You should have told them to look up and wave.

There are good questions, and then there are questions which prove you didn't pay attention or are too lazy to think.
