AirVenture aircraft attendance was light due to the really bad weather Friday and Saturday. Lots of rain and bad thunderstorms went through that thoroughly drenched the field. There were literally rivers going through the campgrounds. The field was closed through Monday morning to many arrivals - even show planes. Fond Du Lac airport camping was fuller than normal due to the OSH arrival closures. I suspect that many who planned an early arrival gave up and went home.
A helicopter lesson got my juices flowing. Really like the Enstrom product. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1564593160.jpg My old bird. Sadly, the current owner removed the South African Air Force livery and painted it Iowa ANG. He lives in DBQ. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1564593160.jpg |

Yep, and it looked like that wheel was folding as it taxied out of view. Nothing further about it.

Read a comment from the Bonanza pilot on another forum... He said his speed was not the issue rather he hit the wake turbulence from the Tri-motor that had preceeded him. It just sucked him downed instantly... I think he actually did a pretty good job knowing now what happened.

Yep it was really muddy in camp Saturday and Sunday. I got lucky and pulled right into my spot Saturday morning behind the paved camper registration road. A few hours later the second rainstorm hit. ;)
I was high and dry http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1564601531.jpg But others were not so lucky :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1564601531.jpg |

Good scary reminder of what to be aware of when landing behind bigger heavier aircraft. I am sure due to the number of aircraft in the area and the rush to get everyone down contributed to the crammed spacing contributed to this. The pilot did an outstanding job recovering and keeping the plane upright.
One thing not mentioned in the YouTube video and it’s comments(on YouTube), at least the one I watched, “wake turbulence” after the Ford Tri-Motor rolled through. Probably also popped the Bonanza. At the shop a few months ago, we were discussing wake turbulence as well as rotor wash from the local helicopter operations. The following video, which I am sure many of you have seen clearly demonstrates the risk of landing or taking off after a large heavy helicopter. I apologize that I have not mastered the “embedding” trick in my phone but here is the link to the video. When you watch it, notice the time stamp and just how long it actually is after the Blackhawk departs. I believe that there were fatalities as well. It’s a small world out there and there is the chance someone here knows the families affected. Just keep them in your thoughts is all I ask. https://youtu.be/l8EwvDTJeNs Back in the late 90’s, I was in the pattern at Hemet-Ryan in a Citabria on short final when a four engine fire-tanker did a full power run-up test of its engines in the run-up area(maintenance). For those that have never landed at Hemet, you could set your watch to the time that the strong crosswinds roll in. At about 150’ agl, the wash hit me after being blown right into my path, it was everything I could do to keep the Citabria upright. After the go-around, the guy on the controls apologized profusely because he didn’t have his radios on and know I was on final. That was in my “training” days and had I not been in the Citabria and say the C-150, I honestly don’t think it would have recovered[emoji51]. I don’t have any desire to test that theory. The things we learn in an extreme short amount of time..... |

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...16a3adbaa8.jpg CDF pounced on the fire yesterday that was very close to the airport. Between the helicopter and the multi tanker drops, it was contained. Due to the potential of “???” I chose not to fly due to a possible TFR and them closing KPVF. The ironic thing about yesterday was the Montana based fire team that was based here for two weeks, flew back last Friday. That was the KMAX crew that I posted earlier. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...485ec099a3.jpg If they had been here, the fire would have been crushed much sooner. This morning, the CDF mobile command center rolled passed me at 0530 headed back to Sac. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

With the level of technology advancing like it is, does anyone know if it is in the works to be able to access pilot remotely activated runway lighting vis a cellular network? As an emergency back-up.
A friend of mine(Longeze owner)had his com radio completely burn out, on a night flight. I know that is a good reason to carry a small handheld but for those that don’t have one(yet), it was just a question. I am now looking at one myself since I fly home during the wee AM hours. Having logged several hours in the Longeze, daytime landings are a handful, I can just imagine how fun a dark landing would be. The owner being a retired fighter pilot/instructor, it was just another day in the park for him.[emoji849] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I bought a 1946 Taylorcraft last year. Came with skis as well, but I haven’t flown with them yet. I have longish term plans to get bigger tires and use it for hunting and backcountry trips.

Restoring the SBD -1 has its challenges. Had to bring the rudder home to do the Ceconite and paint. Cannot do it on Base because of base regs and EPA.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1564891573.jpg

Yeah, that is good sound advise. You just never know when something like that could happen. Several years ago I would practice that but I must admit, I do need to knock the dust out of the ol file cabinet. I do remember that the last time I did that at a very late hour. I simulated a total electrical failure and landed with nothing... I do distinctly remember that at the time, CalStar had a satellite office with a staffed crew 24/7 on field. After landing and I was taxing back to my tie down, a CalStar crew member threw open the door and stood there mean mugging me as I taxied by. It was like 1:00 AM and with nobody remotely close to being in the pattern, I figured I was good for a simulated electrical failure. I don’t think my opinion mattered to the Med crew.[emoji51] In my short time in the Longeze in daylight, I can only imagine what a total darkness landing would be like at night. I guess that is where his pushing fighters around for his career paid off with regards to EP’s. The silver lining about the whole thing, is that it pushed up his timeline for his new avionics package replacement.[emoji1] also means that while he is out of town, I get a chance to work on the fairings for the gear and he also will send the Kato off for overhaul. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c4ff8382f8.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Helicopter travel (Uber-style) in NYC might be curtailed.
https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-08-03/uber-1-helicopter-ridesharing-flourishes-over-nyc-haters-seek-ban I once took a helo tour of Kauai and would love to take one there someday. It's all virtual for now. http://www.drzewiecki-design.net/prodNYCity_X.htm |
^^
The article mentioned the annoyance of city dwellers in NY bothered by the Uber Air Taxis over their head. How are city dwellers going to feel when there are hundreds of autonomous urban air vehicles over every major city..? |
