Nope. Our HS daughter is claimed as a dependent and no money for her. She gets no check herself even though she paid taxes since she was a dependent.

My son was graduating high school in 2018 (the tax year that the stimulus is based on). He then ent on to graduate from UNOH with a diesel tech degree in late 2109. He is currently working full time, has a new apartment, and an aging car, with many school loans, but no stimulus check.

My wife, and I both got them (and don't really need them), so we gifted one to him.

With the Federal government involved they have to set some parameters. At what age so they cut it off?

It sucks to be left out, and the screams from the lower income folks would be extreme if people with 100K or 200K incomes or some cut off point got checks the noise would be extreme. Should Bezoes of Gates or Buffet get a stimulus check? They would not even know they got it. I had a part time job in High school, and went full time the day after graduation.

So, yes, it is unfair that some don't get a check, but there has to be a cutoff somewhere.

No one in my family gets one...yet we are certainly helping pay for them. Actually, I am proud that is the case (and a bit lucky). That said, it seems to me that they should have just gone to folks that involuntarily lost their income due to the virus.

No kidding. My sister, who still has her job, got a check. My other sister, who's comfortably retired with a gov't pension, got a check. My 89-year old mother got a check, despite no change in her status. A friend who makes $85K per year and is still working at her Silicon Valley job got a check. Even a man who died three years ago got a check!

My wife got laid off and my business has come to a screeching halt. No check for us! And of all the people above, we are the only ones who are supporting kids (2) in college. Of course a stimulus check would make no difference, anyway. But the way the gov't is distributing the checks makes no sense.

Only Rs can give away borrowed money faster than Ds....and vice versa .

I received a check (did not back in '08)....don't need it.

It also pisses me off when folks are applying for the SBA & PPP loans that don't REALLY need it....thus shutting out others in real need.

According to the IRS website, though your daughter will not receive a check nor will you get additional money for her as a dependent, she will be eligible for a $1200 tax credit on her 2021 tax return if you continue to claim her as a dependent when you file your 2020 return. That may or may not work for you, but it's something to be aware of next filing season.

Keep this in mind, the money is designated by the IRS as Economic Impact Payments, not unemployment payments nor payments to make up for losses of jobs. The "easiest" way to get that money into the hands of the public so it can be spent in their local communities is through the IRS and the rules it established. Clearly, some individuals are not getting the "free money." The logic, I assume, is those in higher incomes, prior to the shut down, do not need it. Unfortunately, the rules are broad and crude and you fell between the cracks--you don't qualify because your income was too great at the time of qualification, but now it has collapsed.

The fact that some still with jobs, the elderly, retired pensioners, got checks is exactly the point of the distribution. Put extra money into their hands so they will spend it. The deceased recipient is the result of the crudeness of the rules. Obviously, a tax return had been filed for him in the past two years, so he received a payment.

^^^ My elderly parents each received one too....no need. If they wanted the $ spent fast....send the checks to women and teenagers !

Since my check is Sammy's $....I'm gonna circulate mine to Pelosi and Boxter or whatever her name is

edited: I'm not sure my parents' received a deposit actually....only their SS had been added when I asked my mom about it (after mine showed up in my acct.). They should however....and will not spend it from their house. Not much logic was applied imo...just FREE $...the US doesn't have .

The $1200 check program is far from perfect. They chose speed over optimization. Look at how slow and messed up the PPP has been, I think this was the right choice.

Hopefully everyone reading this thread understands these are two totally separate deals:


1) The "stimulus checks" only care about 2018 (or last year's) AGI and dependency status. Claimed kids aren;t getting them. It is also why your other family members got them - regardless of their CURRENT employment status. Parents WILL get a tax credit for their kids on next year's taxes. This is 100% a US Treasury program.

2) Unemployment benefits have been seriously beefed up - effectively tripled from what I have been told. Your wife should apply if she hasn't already. Hope you're not in Florida though. Their unemployment benefit system is crashing regularly.
