Does anyone actually miss movie theaters ?

I don’t.
I think I've seen one movie in theaters in the last decade (F vs. F)

Huge waste of money.
$15 to see a movie.
$30 for 2 people.

Huge waste of time,
when you factor in driving, parking, lines, endless trailers.
1.5 hour movie ends up being a 3 hour ordeal.

And you can't pause the movie to go for a leak!

You may not know just how important that is to me!

I can't remember the last time I was in a movie theater - probably taking the kids to a Pixar something when they were little.

Friends of mine are going through serious movie theater withdrawal, however. They absolutely love the experience of going to a first run.

This is another YMMV, IMHO, etc. deal. First run to me is watching it from home for the initial time

Not too much. Not too many around here anyway... It’s gotten pretty ridiculous price-wise and all the gimmicks (such-and-such sound, 3D, whatever) really don’t add much. Marginal added benefit for lots more $$$. Plus sick of Hollywood’s non-creativity and over-reliance on SFX to offset horrible writing and non-existent plots. I went to Cannes last year and found that way fun (despite the pretentiousness). Maybe a couple a year if that I’d consider.

I like them but it's only a couple times per year.

I do. Some movies are really best sen on the big screen. A recent one that should appeal to this crowd would be Ford Vs Ferrari. Being completely immersed in the visuals is great.

Also for pee breaks there are apps that you can down load which will vibrate your phone at non critical points, normally 2-4 points in the movie that will give you a few mins to run for a pee. I can't remember the name as I've changed phones recently and haven't downloaded it on my new one.

Let me guess.
‘“Ticket for one”?

I love movie theaters. But I can’t seem to find the time.

Was it more expensive than watching at home? Yes, but then sitting on the couch doesn't have the same feeling of being an event. I miss that; going somewhere for a reason, the feeling of anticipation. And a huge screen with massive sound without having to correct the puppy or fear waking up the kids is a HUGE plus.

My wife and friends stopped including me in their what-movie-should-we-see-at-which theater conversations more than a decade ago. I've been in a movie theater maybe once in the last 20 years, an experience which only reinforced to me why I don't like them.

Kind of, not that we go all the time, but I did enjoy an occasional movie with the kids when they were little .
I have a 2.5 year old now, and it would be a shame if he did not get to enjoy the experience at least once .
Last movie I saw in theater was the re-release of Smokey and the Bandit .

But you get to enjoy your feet sticking to the floor from day-old spilled coke and who knows what.

What an experience.

I love going to the theater. I rarely do because the missus doesn't really enjoy it.

I like the huge screen and the sound. I probably go 1-5 times per year, but could easily see myself going 20-30 times a year. I usually wait until the movie has been out a few weeks and then go during an off time so the theater is usually mostly empty. We end up paying a bit less too because the times that I go are usually in the afternoon (fewer teenagers) so we pay "matinee" prices.

The only movies rally worth going to are IMAX 3D movies with the glasses and giant screens. It is just over the top amazing assault on the senses with the big sound and razor sharp 3D view.

Pandora is just not the same in 2D at home.

Not really, we go maybe 5-6 times per year. There’s a local place that has dining and drinks during the movie which we like.

My parents go all the time, like weekly. They are probably going through withdrawal right now.

okay, i do admit i am finding the theaters really loud now. the sound systems are so over the top. i find that on some movies, they are too loud and i have to put in earplugs. which really dampens the affects and benefits of a great theater.

but i like them. i like the smell, i like the new seats, and our local theaters are really clean.

i dont think a movie lile Alita battle angel should be seen anywhere but on the big screen.

My wife and I really enjoy going out for the evening and there are 4 different theaters showing independent films and offbeat stuff that we can frequent.
For us, it's an escape from the humdrum, a night out with friends, combined with dinner, and if it's a good film, a few hours immersed in something other than our own lives.

Now, having said that, I can't for the life of me, understand how they manage to stay in business, showing films that are available on line for a few bucks, or free.

Remind me again, just what is left that is fun, besides food, sex and weed ?

No. There are certain movies that are better on a big screen, with the big sound system, but I got burned out on movie theaters working at one.

I try to go to our beutiiful local historic theaters which have been saved at great expense. However the movie selections are usually not to my personal tastes and downtown parking is a bear. They do serve as a valuable cultural hub as a multi-functional events location. I feel every city needs something like that as a minimum. It just makes a place livable.

The chains have become far too expensive in this day and age of free informational overload and instant entertainment on phones. They have priced themselves out of being a regular habit for most. I understand they have high overhead expenses but they seemed to have made that worse with all the modern gimmicks instead of just providing the latest movies or even vintage night at a decent price. The modern public has been already squeezed both economically and schedule-wise and these decisions seem to go against consumer trends. IDK.

Hollywood and the distribution monopolies further gouge them...until concessions becomes the movie theater's only income source. Add in sound systems at volume eleven, fifteen buck popcorn, mostly flashy movies with no plot, and the thought of "going to the movies" sort of fades away.
Once bitten twice shy.

I really enjoy the theater for early afternoon movies.
Evening ones are a waste of money for me....I fall asleep every time.
The recliner chairs are so comfortable...

We used to go to the movies 2-3 times a week including dinner and movie night on Sundays with a bunch of friends. Miss movies, miss seeing all my friends having a great time eating and catching up and discussing the film. Can't wait to get back.
