Nice looking work space , are you planning on finishing the ceiling ? Does the space have HVAC ? I agree that is a great looking floor . A four post lift that can be moved around the shop on casters might be a solution for you . Have fun

I'm still deciding about the ceiling. I like the open feel, and our winters are pretty mild. No heat or AC--currently--though I do use space heaters.

Your place looks great. For 40 yrs of parts and tools it all looks pretty tidy. I have three shelves similar to yours - they are pretty good.

I had all my tools in the same basic setup for years, to the point where I could find the right drawer in the toolbox with my eyes closed. Then I had to expand and reorganize because I outgrew my original tool box and added a second. Then I built this place and reorganized again. Now I can't find anything. . .

The floor process. We spent a lot of time and money ensuring that the slab was smooth as glass, only to have it all diamond ground. This guy from Guardian Coatings does a lot of the tech guy super-hero garages around here (there are a lot of them), and he has a nice business. His work is high quality--he meticulously cut off hundreds of the metal tabs left behind in the concrete. Turned out he was a racer, too, so we had a lot to talk about.

14 feet to the truss bottoms. I wanted adequate clearance.
I designed the place myself, and made a number of decisions that added a lot of expense. The high ceilings were one, as was the 12 x 12 door, which required that that wall have 6-foot concrete heavily reinforced columns on either side of the door. The 6-inch slab was another, as was the 2 x 6 framing and the use of plywood instead of OSB for the roof deck. The rear storage room was another complexity, as it cut into a hillside and required a 7-foot high unopposed concrete wall that required a huge amount of extra rebar. At the end, I was peeling off $5K and $10K chunks of change right and left, but I don't regret building it this way. For such a dog-simple structure, I was surprised how many consequential decisions had to be made. |

Very nice! Jealous of the space, I dream of someday having a detached shop.

Looks fantastic. Plenty of workspace and nice high ceilings. Hate to tell you this, you got your flags mixed up. You really need to get on that.

Very nice space. It’s clear you put a lot of planning into it. The utility room is a huge advantage- gets the noisy compressor in another room and stores a lot of crap that you wouldn’t want to negotiate around in the main area. I love it.
Also the lift decision makes sense. The amount of time it would outshine your midrise would be minimal, and as you said, it depends on what your future projects look like anyway. The oak does look jarring but you could probably respray it white in an hour and they would disappear. Beats busting out another $5-8k for Gladiator stuff. Let’s see some shots from outside!

You know of course, a garage is never really done. It is like a car restoration. Even years later there is something that needs to be updated or changed.
