"X" the unknown quantity
"spert" a drip under pressure

"Expert"; an unknown drip under pressure.

I like to think I know a bit about my professional field, and a few things about some more obscure areas of ornithology.

I seem to have wrangled myself into becoming an "expert" in what is called remote handling. Basically handling and replacement of highly radioactive stuff that can't be done hands-on. I am currently reviewing a paper for a nuclear journal and travel all over the world supporting reviews for other facilities, etc.

Having said that, an "expert" to me doesn't mean someone who knows everything. The more I learn, the more I realize (and fully admit) that I don't know. That makes it easy to review other facilities and other systems. I don't go in with the attitude "I know everything and you need to listen to me". I go in with "I have a lot of hard-won experience and I am here to help you be successful in a way that suits your facility".

I will quote the very learned and experienced Mike Baxter, “I’m very opinionated, but always right.”

Though I may be an expert, I do have something most millennials could use a good dose of . . . COMMON SENSE.

Me? Yes in certain areas like my new position with the local gov-mnt and a large part of my hobby restoration/ classics/ valuations. Are there people smarter and .more experienced? Of course. Mine is the cumulative of college, life's experiences, doing it day in and out.

I have worked in manufacturing for 47 years - I have worked in automotive for 39 of the 47 years. I'm amazed I am still valued. Not an expert because you never stop learning but I'm very good at what I do.

Expert: Someone from a distance, carrying a briefcase.

I would say I am an expert on photographic processors for developing film. Black & White, color negative or E6 color slide film. Not a big demand for that expertise in the world of digital in 2020. We were a certified "Q-Lab" and had a sign on the door to let clients know. I had to process a special filmstrip we had to buy from Kodak, and mail to them in a special envelope for them to read it to be sure our chemicals were in the perfect concentrations to produce repeatable results, and proper results. We were the only Q-lab in Oklahoma.

I truly have forgotten more about photography than most ever learn. It is the only profession I have had since I was a junior in high school.

My father claimed "An expert is someone who doesn't make the same mistake three times."

As an engineer, I think you're considered an expert when you realize you could give or teach 9 out of 10 lectures or courses at conferences you attend.

I *usually* only make the mistake once, but it takes three times as long to fix, and the fix cost three times as much.

Sometimes I think I'm an expert at screwing things up. Does that count?
