I get the feeling that if I had stayed I90 till Chicago, I'd already be well past it. Iowa burned up a lot of time

Arrived to Pataskala at about 4:30am this morning. A bit over 59 hours after I left, if my tired head can math at the moment . I'll have to check the time on my starting fill receipt.
9 hours sleep during that drive. ![]() |

I like long distance drives, but falling asleep at the wheel keeps me from doing long stretches without sleeping enough. I don't drink coffee so that isn't an option to help stay awake.
Glad you made it safely.

Two years ago the wife and I took a driving trip from Wisconsin to Maine, then Boston, and we made a stop in Hershey PA on the way back. I found out two things - I need a lot more driving breaks than when I was younger, and I can't handle sitting in the passenger seat when she is driving. It's like she has no depth perception, or can't calculate the closing rate with the truck ahead of her vs the car coming up in the left lane. You should stop at Plyhammer's Parts on the way back, he's about 100 miles west of you. |

I usually consider 12 hours of driving per day my maximum. I find a motel, and a few beers and a meal and hit the bed.
I have done a few back to back 12 hour drives. Living in Oklahoma City, I can get to just about anywhere in 24 hours of driving. Driving while sleepy is far worse than driving while drunk. I won't do it. I get the little nasty tasting bottles of 5 hour energy which is mostly niacin and it keeps me alert for 4 hours, but I can fall asleep easily after 5 or 6 hours. It is the only time I use that stuff.

I've done 19 hours straight and was seeing illusions when I finally saw a Motel something or another. That was it for me but I was back on the road 6 hours later to finish a 2200 mile drive. 2nd day was 12, IIRC.

Two days of that is too damn much for me.
My longest shot was 1250 miles in about 20 hours from Manchester, NH to Martin, Tn. I flew up to pick up the SC I bought and the first drive (other than a short test drive and then to a hotel) was 1250 miles. |

I just happen to know it is 911 miles to the motel I like in Flagstaff, AZ and 914 miles to the hotel in Maryville, TN at the start of the Tail of the dragon. Both are just straight down I-40 in opposite directions.

In my yute I did Dallas to Los Angeles non-stop a couple of times - once pulling a trailer. Made it in 22 3/4 hours. Never again.
But I still love a road trip. I usually stick around a place a little too long, then drive until sleepy. Basic (clean) motel, 6-7 hours of rest, and do it again no problem. Ps - looking forward to road-trip-pics!

This reminds me of traveling for business. As MrsWD says, “We’ve been everywhere, but we haven’t seen anything.”
Wave at the signs to Mt Rushmore as we roll by, “gotta get back to the office.” It sucked and I regret that we didn’t slow down.
