Not the 911 but the Cobra replica. There were a bunch of us helping at the local punt/pass/kick event for kids and the weather started turning bad so we gathered everything up and taking it back to the gym. One guy needed a ride so I was volunteered. No big deal to me, it has two seats. When he was getting in he said "Small car, must get great mileage". He jumped when I started it. I laughed and said "No".

Had a couple kids ask if I would adopt them. My wife has used it to run to the library and what not with it had more kids ask her when she is driving to race the Cobra than they have asked me.

I've never gotten a negative comment on my car (it's the only car I've owned that gets a significant amount of attention, so it took a while to get used to) but last month I was at a light down the street from my GF's building in downtown Chicago when the FedEx truck driver next to me asked me what year it was (by far the most popular first question) and spoke wistfully of the 914 he'd bought new when he was in the armed services.

My wife and I went to pick up carry out at the local Chinese place and she stayed inside my daily driver while went to pick up the order. My daily is a 97 BMW Z3 with 196K miles. Cheap, fun, roadster that I call Tape since it's only worth about $2K and I use tape on the seats and most anything else that's too expensive to replace. There were some kids hanging outside waiting for their order. They asked my wife how fast the car was (I have the mega slow 1.9 engine) and how much it was worth. She smiled and said 'not very fast' and 'not worth very much'. But they continued to lavish the car with praise. Especially after she told them it was a stick and not automatic. It told her it happens to me alot. People see that the car is old but that it's a BMW and assume it's valuable.

I get lots of thumbs up on the highway in the 964. I figure they feel sorry for the old guy in the Porsche.

My 914 get alot of double takes. People always come up at the gas station to see where I'm putting the gas into. I also get the "my friend used to own one of these. It was so much fun", etc.

Shortly after the first F&F movie came out...I was parking my 78SC on the street. A boy, prob about 10 years old, was on the other side of the street with his dad..pointing at me and yelling.."Look Dad..it's Fast and Furious!"

I had a female co-worker admire my car in the parking lot...and asked for a test ride.

I hate giving test ride, so my standard response, intended to deter and insult was: "I only give test rides to naked passengers."

Her response was "no problem"

Yikes!

Haven't used that line since....

You just have to be more selective on whom you use that line.

In a small town in NC I had stopped at a pizza joint for lunch. When I was walking to my car, a sheriff’s deputy was looking at my 83SC. He asked, “How fast does this go sir?” I replied, “60 miles per hour in the state of North Carolina sir”. We both laughed.

Another time I was traveling through the outskirts of Columbus, Ohio. An older (early ‘70s) pickup truck was next to me at the light. The driver, with Canadian accent, asks, “Do you want to race?” I replied, “Under two conditions, 1-you have your title with you, and 2-if we race for top speed”. He turned right and went on his way.

When I bought my SC, I was driving it home to MI on I-90 through Montana. Was doing 70-80 mph when a biker and his lady on the back pulled along side me on the left side.
He was driving a chopped Harley and shouted at me.."Let's see what they will do"
He blew past me...prob going 100 with a gal on the back...such a stupid move.

After "what year is it?", the most often asked question is "Is it a Turbo?". I tell them "No but it is a Hemi". They don't know what to do with that. A close third is a question about the value.

In a parking lot, a guy walked over to me and asked the usual questions mentioned above. His last question was "how much is it worth?", I said not sure, mid 30s. He laughed, pointed at his Audi and said "mine is worth more than yours". I replied, yup and moved on.

I have also had people give me the thumbs down several times, in both of my 911s (68, 83). Last time it happened it was a young guy in a Honda. First time it happened it was a guy that looked liked he was in his 30s driving a pickup truck.

On the flip side, lots of positive comments as well.

I'm spending a lot of time at my town house and have both Porsches parked there. The 930 sits hidden away in the garage. On the other side of the house, I have a carport that is right on the road. My 88 cab resides there most of the time. Last weekend I was working in the patio and a mother and her some came walking by and the boy said, "Ooh, race car!" I lol'd and kept working in the patio, but with a smile!

I'm fairly certain I will get plenty of weird responses/questions when I do drive the 944 in our town. I haven't seen a Porsche here yet. Lots of pick ups around.

I talked up a crew running fiber optic to the library as they worked in front of our house. They had been wondering what car was under the cover, so I obliged. I don't think they were all that impressed.

When I was in my early 30s and had just bought my 930, I stopped at the local post office to drop off some mail. Back then (2005) at 6'1" and a svelte 160lbs, I wore lots of Nike gear (from the their shoes, tear-away track pants, athletic shirts and baseball cap), this particular day was no different than others in what I wore. As I walking towards my car getting ready to unlock it, an older gent (in his 60s or 70s) approached me and asked me if I was a professional athlete.

I cracked up.

I used to get lots of comments, thumbs up, reactions when I had the old targa. Almost all of them were positive. Most young boys thought it was cool. I had a few instances where someone drove like a moron for some reason including one where someone in an old Bronco II ended up on 2 wheels on the highway.

Is it a natural?

(me... thinking Turbo vs N/A) .... it sure is!

Him... it sure doesn't sound like it.... he was talking about the sound

Even the cop who wrote me up one Sun. morning drive years ago gave me compliments too .

One day I was coming home from a car show and stopped at a Ralph’s to pick something up. Naturally my car, a 1975 Targa with a 3.0, was detailed and looking pretty good. I have an incredibly real replica of a Monroney (Window) Sticker which I will put in the passenger side window for effect. The sticker is for a 1975 Carrera, loaded. The sticker states the MSRP was $19,050.56.

As I left the store I see a guy looking at the car, he looks at me and says “10.”

I said no, “‘75.”

He said, “You are Crazy!”

I replied, “It’s a ‘75”

He said, “No, I’ll give you 10 (thousand) for it.”

I told him “Now you are the crazy one,” and drove off.

Years ago, I was stopped for a coffee. Standing by my 71 with my Labrador, Daisy. Up walks a young father with two little ones in tow, maybe five to sevenish????? A little boy and a little girl. He compliments my car and asks if the kids can check it out. I asked them if they wanted to sit behind the wheel. We started the car for them, opened the trunk the works. The best part was when I asked them if they wanted to honk the horn; you should have seen the smiles

It was a moment I will never forget. That car and those little ones.
Oh, and it was the little girl that wanted to see the motor! It was wonderful.

You know what OP, just say “nice day isn’t it?” The next time someone eyes your car. Unless they ask about it, best not to comment about your car.

Driving home from a mate's one afternoon, I spot a Honda behind me with all of the Ricer accoutrements weaving forward in traffic. About 2 lights later he and I are at the line together and I stereotypically expected him to rev as a challenge and then blast off. Instead he gives me a thumbs up, a "Nice car, I have been trying to catch up for a good look." I replied that his car was a nice looking ride, the light turned green and he tooled away without fanfare.
Some folks are car folks and others are not.

I have two memorable 911 stories. In early 2000’s when I was single I had a stock 89 911 as a 2nd car which I only drove in nice weather. I had a beater blue Buick Century as a daily. Driving alone one evening thru the burbs a black limo pulls along side. An attractive young woman pops up out of the sun roof and waves. I oblige with a lil Horn honk. She then descends back into the car like a pop a mole. Next thing I know she pops up again, but this time bare chested. She flaunted her goods for a few seconds and I gave another couple honks and a thumbs up.

Next story, took the 911 to a wedding in the country on a beautiful weekend. Great opportunity for a country backroad drive. Good friends sister was getting married. Friend of bride see’s me drive up in 911 and later at reception has over indulged and asks for ride home in 911. In the end, wants more than car ride, but I didn’t want any of it, just dropped her off and went home.

Never would have had either experience with my old grandma car Buick.
