This was probably about 2005 or so. I put my (now gone) 86 911 in the Sloan Museum car show in Flint, MI. Walking around, met another 911 driver and a 356 driver. We decided to move so we would be parked next to each other. The couple with the truck next to me were sitting right by the tailpipe. I let them know I was about to move and did not want them to get a face full of exhaust. I had been nothing but pleasant to them all morning. Little but unpleasantness back from them but I was still just enjoying the day. Anyway, the wife made some nasty comment about "that thing" referring to my car. Did not say anything, just smiled. I thought about saying something about the truck that they had painted-over the giant rust spots but I am glad I did not. I am sure if I did, in their minds they would remember the nasty arrogant porsche driver from that car show.

Some young boy racers were trying to wind me up by slagging off the 911SC "Old piece of crap.." etc. I said "You're quite right, a lot has happened in forty years, you guys are lucky to have electronic engine management, good fuel economy, fast..." Then they completely changed their tune and started defending the 911.

Neat young guys and passionate about their cars LOL

Driving the family Volvo station wagon, I pull next to a yellow 996 (I like yellow in general):

Me: nice car!
Him: it sure beats a Volvo!

I own a silver 996 and an early SC.

I think most of the time they are looking at what kind of person is driving the car rather than the car itself. And they might say whatever they feel like to see what you have to say back and confirm their suspicions. Most of my experiences are compliments. Other times I just laugh. Im not that great at thinking up good replies on the spot. I like it best when driving along and some kid points all excited and you see his lips yell Porsche! then the parents look up and have no clue. Everyone says kids have no interest in cars but they kinda do. Its just that they dont have enough exposure to them these days there are less and less cool cars on the road thats why its important to get them out and about

If that didn't piss you off, nothing would. That's awfully ignorant.

Indian (Punjab) guy at the Clear Gas stn. today recognized mine as a Porsche. When he asked what year it was I had to say "many different years, but the body is a '73).

He also enjoyed my joke about the Chinese Army...

- made me think of the min. wage thread, as he looked 40ish

He may well own the station.

You should probably look up "trip around the world" in the urban dictionary. Just sayin'.

I was dating a girl who owned a modern VW beetle and during lunch we had this conversation:

she - My beetle looks like a 911...
me - what?? I own a 911 and they don't look alike.

Lunch was very quiet and awkward. Never went out with her again.

I know I've mentioned this before...

I was driving along and noticed in the distance two girls aged about 12 or 13 at a bus stop. One girl tapped the other on the arm and pointed at the 911 approaching. They started doing exaggerated 1960's dancing, and when I looked back they were doubled up laughing. Made my day
