Most Heavily Armed States

https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/most-heavily-armed-states-in-america/

I would have never guessed some were higher or lower.

Quote:
While this list is lengthy, it does not include categories like pistols, which make up a large percentage of the guns in the U.S. As such, the total numbers of guns in each state would actually be much higher than the figures here. This gallery is a but a snapshot of some of the broader trends.

15.2 guns for every 1000 residents.

I call bull crap on that.

Registered firearms.

No wonder they have no idea of how many guns are out there. In New Zealand we wouldn't have a clue.

Those stats are flawed.

Here in SC we don't register our firearms. We do Federal backgrounds but not if it is private sale or gun show sales. They have no way of knowing how many firearms there are.

DC #2 because they are required to register.

Yup. Same in most conservative states. Also doesn’t take into account those that are passed down through family and friends that were purchased prior to background check requirements. Take whatever is known and the reality is exponentially more.

What!? A journalist completely misunderstood the topic they were reporting on and drew a bunch of conclusions that were the complete opposite of reality? I'm shocked.

Fortunately, we can count on them to get the important stuff right. Like viruses.

Given what I know about my friends' gun collections, those numbers might be off by a factor of 10.

Or 20.

Or 30.

Don't know for sure, as nobody will give you the real number they own. But, it's in that ballpark.

Shocked, shocked I say!

Apparently I count for > 1,000 people. I should get that many votes

Clickbait article based on NFA federally registered items database (SBR, Class III, suppressors, etc.). Nothing from Form 4473 transfers, private party transfers, etc..

It just shows you how a typical reporter doesn't know enough about the subjects they cover. Had I been asked to write an article on that subject, I'd have declined, as I know that there is no reliable data available.

Honestly, I don't know what number I'd even give if asked.

I have various projects in various states of completion. Some are legally firearms (had to fill out 4473), but lack the ability to fire a bullet. Some have the ability to fire a bullet but are not legally firearms (like a musket).

My gun collection was lost in a tragic boating accident, right in the middle of the lake several years ago.

There is no registration needed here. I went to a gun show at at the state fairgrounds back in the early 1980s. I walked up to a table, saw what I wanted, and handed the guy behind the table the cash, and walked out. Well, after stopping at a different table to buy ammo.

Now of course there is a federal background check to buy a gun from a dealer. Those records are supposedly deleted after a short time.

No registration in most states, and the list in the link above is only for long-spoons. It does not include hand spoons, which is probably huge.

This list is like saying "this is a list of all of the people that have died in our city. Except that it's only the people that died of natural causes (not diseases or accidents) in hospital #3 out of our 5 hospitals. We also aren't counting the people that died in locations other than hospitals. But this is the complete list."

+1 Alaska at 15 and Wyoming at 195 (I think) guns per 1k heads. There's different types of accounting going on.

I have a feeling those countdown articles exist to generate mouse clicks for advertising revenue. Content is secondary.

Don't think reporters are only clueless about guns. You can assume this level of ignorance on most issues they cover. I love the reports about background checks each month outpacing the previous month. I probably buy at least five guns a year. Haven't been through a background check in 12 years other than for my CCW renewals. So how many guns do they think I have?
