I am another one in the racing incident camp. The FChat guys are rabid that it was Ham's fault, but it takes two to tangle, well it could be tango if there was no crash.
I liken this to hard racing, and nothing else. And that is the way it should be.

I'd like to see video footage of Hamilton's crash position in the turn and other positions in the same turn. It sure looked to me that he was a few feet wide of his normal position and my argument would be that Max would expect him to be in the normal position.

I am going to agree with the commentators.
Two aggressive drivers. Max was mildly pinching LH down, planning on LH backing off. LH was mildly pushing Max wide, planning on Max backing off. Neither backed off, with predictable results. Was a racing incident. If not for luck, the results could have, just as easily, been LH looses his front wing and Max wins the race. I truly admire LH's talent and know that you have to beat him to beat him. He gives very few races away for free. That being said, I still cheer for whom ever beats LH

In most racing these events happen and are accepted on the last lap not the first lap.

Why are they allowed to work on the car during a red flag? especially if you caused it?

When you are in it to be top dog it is a psychic combat with anyone else that has that same goal.
You have to not just beat them, you have to break them. They sent eachother messages, and it seems that Hamilton's message hit harder that day. |

Exactly right. So far HAM has backed off to avoid crashes from Max's rather agressive moves...Sooner or letter he was gonna send a message. I put this one 70% Ham 30% Max but that's not the point at all, Hamilton was just finally sending a message and nto backing off... Still, maybe not the safest corner to do so, not a classy move and it could have ended badly (say a flip). Not a fan.

That's a very good point... Hamilton has such luck when he gets penalized.. Had he needed repairs and taken the penalty, that may have been a real penalty and a fairytale result for Leclerc. Especially as you said, if you caused it... Fair enough for the rest of the field but that was a little much to give HAM a free pass on repairs.

I recall a couple of years ago there was a race that had a red flag and restart. I was sitting there thinking, great Hammy will have to stop after the restart for tires or whatever, so he is screwed and won't win. Then the announcers explained how the teams could do various things to the cars during the red flag. My heart sank. Why should a team/driver benefit from that situation whether they caused the red flag or not? In the absence of the red flag, they would have had to gone to the pits for fuel, tires, or new nose, or BJ and a steak. At least in my way of thinking, this rule just allows the driver/team a huge advantage, like around 30 seconds on track. So if a competitor is having a good and clean race knowing they will gain position when the driver has to pit, they are the ones getting screwed. I think in that race the other drivers had pitted and were just waiting for Hammy to cycle through his pit stop. I have similar feelings about pitting under Safety Car or VCS. Mainly for fairness.

The video shows a racing incident. I don't think you can get mpre from that... Probably more on Lewis than Max...
But what gets my goat is that the very guy that caused it gets to repair his car and go on to win. That's bull$hit. In that case give Verstappen a new car too ;-) (I know he was being checked out, I know there's no spare, but you know, fairness?) In essence there was no penalty at all... F1 gave the best driver/car combo left in the field a 10 seconds penalty, with his main opponent gone, it's no penalty at all. I'm sure he was laughing inside, he can pass the entire field in the space of a race. I'm sure RedBull received the message too. Were there any penalty points on Hamilton ? Also it all felt super hypocritical from Hammy: "Oh,is Max OK?" (Gee wheez I sure hope so after I just punted him into the wall at 300 kph?). "i hope we can resume our fight with respect"... please, cinderella! It's official, I really dislike the guy now... His fake innocence and "positive energy" are getting to me. Guess I'll be a Max fan then (that's new too). Last edited by Deschodt; 07-19-2021 at 03:08 PM.. |

Being the reining world champion, being behind in the points and on his home track certainly helps....

I have issues with this rule also, regardless if you caused the incident. It is not fair to the other teams. Can’t touch the cars in parc ferme, but red flag? Have at it lads.

How about Vettel after the race, grabbing a garbage bag and helping some volunteers pick up garbage fans had left behind? I didn't use to like the guy, but am changing my mind.
Maybe because yesterday I rowed with the grand daughter to a beach about a quarter mile away and we picked up over a full bag of garbage. Good on ya, Seb! Best Les

But weren't all the cars allowed to be worked on, and not just Ham's? Unfortunately, no one else's car needed to be worked on.

This was just great racing. I miss the days of Senna and Prost, and Michael and lots of people. There was a fire and a willingness to put it on the line that has been missing during the Merc dominance. I'm not a fan of everything Lewis does, but at least he's proven he has the heart of a racer.

I looked at Hammy's Instagram account on Sunday but didn't see anything that I'd call racist. In fact even the stuff that could barely be considered just abuse was more like people saying it was his fault and his actions post race were disgraceful. Sure other stuff could have been removed but in all these situations there is rarely a recitation of what was actually said. And we are left to believe the assertion. That being said, there is a history of on field racial taunts from the stands at football matches particularly when English teams play on the continent. Hard to say whether this actually occurred or its just a card he likes to play. He is on a crusade to get more black people in motorsport and was the driver behind the pre race kneeling and t-shirt wearing.
