The History Channel should not do cars

I watched "Cars that Changed the World", an episode about VW and Porsche, as well as Toyota and Honda.

On the history of Porsche, they showed a dramatic recreation of Ferry Porsche building the first P-car from a VW. They showed him at his ah-ha moment when he realized he could use the VW, upon which he took a crow bar to the fender of a beetle (I think it was an oval window) and soon tossed the fender on the floor of the barn in Gmund. A crow bar? Really?

But wait, it gets better. When he finished the car he called in his dad to show it to him. It appeared to be a replica of a speedster, and a very bad replica at that. It even said "Speedster" on the side. I had a good laugh.

The History Channel should remove the term "history" from its name. Ancient Aliens? Really?

Also, they show Toyota where the head guy gets back from touring Ford and Chrysler assembly lines / plant and stated they could do so much better, with less men, time....( camera points to a drawing of a "U" instead of a straight assembly line)........totally fabricated.

they missed the real innovation- which was the just in time parts delivery system......

History, TLC, and Discovery all jumped the shark years ago. They used to be educational, now it’s all just trash reality TV and half assed docudrama. Really sad because I used to be an avid watcher of all three before they sold out.

Your telling me "Shark Week" is not solid fact driven TV?

This.

It really is sad that they went from real history to shows like they air now. They love looking for bigfoot, aliens, and Atlantis. Of course they never find the slightest thing except blurry photos that could be anything.

And to suggest that Porsche #1 was a reshaped VW is just astonishing ignorance. A hand formed all aluminum body is not derived from stamped steel of a production VW.

Like the stock photos of the chick holding a soldering iron by the tip or a chick holding a 3/4 in drive torque wrench up at the air cleaner area of a car, it is just gross ignorance on display.

What irks me about any "educational" shows on tnose networks is that it takes 20 minutes and three commercial breaks to convey one simple fact. They treat the audience like idiots. I also gave up years ago.

This. Many of the shows on the "Science" channel are geared toward 3rd graders. I wish they had more real science shows and fewer explainers on one show. We don't need to cut to some other scientist to get all animated and toss his head around like a clown, change the pitch of his voice from low to high, just to explain some fact. It makes me really miss Carl Sagan.

As someone more recent to third grade, nah, wouldn't of done it for me then.

The format these days is to keep doing "coming up next", and "previouslly on".
The actual content cut in an informative manner might be five or six minutes.
They eek it out with coming up's and previousllys ons + commercials into thirty or fourty minutes.

And 3rd grade Terv would have moved on to study a book instead.

This is why I like youtube channels. With a smaller but very focused audience they can start at a common base knowledge and no catering to the lowest denominator is necessary. I have long given up TV in favor of the internet. It was mainly blogs and forums, now videos are taking the place.

No TV, but YT is great. This is a TV show but getting to watch what I want and when fits better.

Right, they used to be great (10-15 years ago?) and then they went to hell. I remember as I watched fewer and fewer shows. It feels like they must have sold out to someone that decided to make them "more popular" by catering to the lowest common denominator instead of the folks that they'd been catering to (sounds familiar, speedvision anyone?).

IDK, I'm watching the Titans series right now. I'm not looking for 100% historical accuracy. I just enjoy the series.

I don't think "entertainment" is the problem. TV is mostly about entertainment.

The problem is that those channels were originally more fact/science/non-fiction focused, and then they changed into more entertainment based with a reduced focus on the other things.
