WTF is this anyway?

My wife found this out in our pasture…

Could be old farming device, possibly a piece of seismic equipment, maybe some other adult entertainment device?

If yes...farming equipment.

Hog oilers for very, very small hogs, or maybe rollers from a very elaborate animal oiling device, or rollers from some sort of sheller or grain separator.

^^^ That's what I'm seeing.."rollers from some sort of sheller or grain separator"....if they are made of steel/iron.

There is cable that runs through these and they sorta plug into one another.

Wouldn't the rust be a bit of a give-away on that one?

It wouldn't be hard to make them look like WW2 hand grenades.

Its a very old Garland idler for an field conveyor. They are under hung by a cable or bracket below the conveyor belt. Don't see those made of metal anymore. Modern ones are urethane to cut down on noise.

They could be Dummy Grenades. You only use the fuse and a small bag of powder for training only.

I had to look up cattle oiler: For the similarly curious, it was a device that livestock brushed up against to get a slathering of oil on their coat, to help ward off flies and lice.

Apparently they were a big deal 100+ years ago, and are now considered collectible (at least the rare ones are) by some.

^^^ They are still used today. Loaded with insecticides and oil.
They are in the form of a large rope that rolls along their backs when passing through.

That's pretty cool. Simple solutions are often best.

It's amazing how little I know about farm/ranch life...

They are still used, but they aren't the old cast iron ones. Some of the old ones can go for hundreds of dollars.
I had a friend, Harold Ottaway, (used to own Joyland Park in Wichita) who was a farm antique collector. Crusty old dude and very wealthy. I was in a restaurant with him getting a sandwich when he ask for a slice of tomato on his cheeseburger. The waitress said it would be 15 cents. You would have thought he was being robbed by Billy the Kid. "I just paid $300 for a hog oiler but I'll be god damned if I'll pay 15 cents for a slice of tomato."
That was 30 years ago and I still remember. I've met some real characters in this life.

We have a rope oiler but I prefer to use a weed sprayer to spray my cows. It’s a mix of diesel and bug repellent. They don’t really like it.
