They would have been better off showcasing the unique flavor of Miami than trying to stage a fake Monaco.

I’m sure the entire world got a good laugh at our expense.

At one point during the weekend broadcast (I believe it was pre-race), there was discussion with Christian Horner about setups, and he said that Red Bull chose a low downforce setup that would optimize top speed at the expense of speed in the curves, whereas Ferrari chose a higher downforce setup to provide more grip in the curves at the expense of top end speed. And he said that the race results would show who chose the correct setup.

I guess we know which one was correct. During FP3 and Qualifying, the Red Bull cars were hitting 336-337 kph at the end of the fastest straight, whereas the other teams were reaching the high 320s or maybe 330kph. That’s the difference that DRS provides! So, that’s why, even with DRS enabled, Ferrari/LeClerc couldn’t close the gap on Max. DRS just made them equal.

Given that information, one would be led to believe Max is better at looking after his tires than Checko or either Ferrari driver. In the past few races Max has managed his pace for a few laps then run his race. A very disciplined strategy.

Road & Track sums it up. F1 has moved on to a new audience.

The Miami Grand Prix Knows What It's Selling

The inaugural Miami Grand Prix felt like something between a live taping of Drive to Survive and an overgrown Instagram prop. That was not a mistake.

Thank-you, Liberty media, for putting F1 race attendance further out of reach of the average fan and into the hands of those who just want to be seen.

It is now a social media event, not a race.

Its a very expensive live performance is it not...?
If one wants more affordable formula to watch in person it is out there in abundance.

This reminds me of the Kentucky Derby (hopefully I haven't said this yet) and ditto the "world championship" game of the NFL. My BIL went to KY Derby last weekend as a guest to one of the companies he does business with. I don't think he would have gone otherwise, not that big a fan.

I noticed many folks on social media posting that they attended at the $$$ of others, usually teams, sponsors, or corporations. I don't want to say who but their comments were all the same; great race, blablabla. I'm sure it was since you went for free.

My first race was in 2002 to Hockenheim and it was about $330 for 3 day admission and a seat directly across from pit lane. I get it that that was 20 years ago but I can't fathom the prices that this GP brought.

Road & Track is behind a paywall now since I used up all my free views. How much did it cost to do the Miami weekend?

Since I'm only a couple hours away, some buddies and I wanted to go. We've been monitoring prices for months. At one point, even Friday practice seats started at $900. Raceday? $1800-$5000 each. We finally gave up planning. Friday morning, those $900 seats were down to $100. Of course there are tons of unsold tickets for today right now and they're down a bit but still $600 and up. I get it, they are after a different customer these days.
Edit: also look at the article in link on previous page. There are direct stories from people that were interviewed. VIP was $30k. Others paid over $1,000 each and up.

I loved the part where the one lady said after Saturday she decided to stay at hotel and watch since it was so bush league.

Yeah, that woman lives in Monaco and has gone to F1 races all over the world.

From what I understand, ticket prices started at $700 or $800 for a three day basic ticket and went up from there.

I think that adding Las Vegas was a pure master stroke move from a business point of view. Not sure about Miami, but time will tell if there is a need to race in both Florida and Texas.

I have zero problem with the race appealing to the social media fans. But maybe people who have zero racing experience should not be given a microphone. No one benefits, including the younger fans, who might benefit from an experienced commentary.

I just happened to see that. Pretty dang good driving.

I know there was a storm, but the stands were all but empty. No idea how Indycar can stay in business w/o butts in seats.

I thought the Indy GP crowd looked pretty decent for the horrible weather conditions. The enormity of the facility tends to make it look empty? That was a great race to watch. There were 362 passes for position
