I don't think that most people use a percentage, just $2/$3/etc.. A $5 tip is big and a $8-10 tip is HUGE, in my experience. I don't look at it as I would in a restaurant, where tipping is expected and should be a certain percentage. It is optional and all tips are appreciated, at least by me.

There is a feature where I can send an instant thanks for a tip and I do it every time, especially if it's a $1.00 tip from some working person who might be struggling. Immigrant cleaning ladies and such. They almost mean more than a $10 tip from a rich person, though those are definitely appreciated as well!

Ubers have gotten expensive and I totally understand if someone can barely afford the ride and does not tip. Once again, it's optional.

Pretty much on any ride under $15, I am tipping $5 minimum. Above that, my tip is going to be 20%-40% depending on how they drive, how clean the car is, how many people are with me and what weather/traffic is like. When its miserable on the roads, the tip is going up.
You are a very generous tipper. When I get a $5.00 or bigger tip, I consider it generous and I never even consider the cost of the ride. I had some big tips over the weekend, one was young guy from NYC who was a designer for Ralph Lauren who I got in a good conversation with and another was a young dad with his son who I picked up at Riviera Country Club after the golf tournament. It was the little boy's first golf tourney and they had fun walking the course. Super nice people, pretty obviously successful guy but I was still surprised by the $10 tip. I always am! It's completely optional but appreciated.

I'm just glad UBER added tipping. I was very uncomfortable not leaving a tip to the point that a few times I causally dropped a few bucks in the seat.

On a side note, my mother in law in Bangkok says us westerners screw up the tipping for everyone else. Like when I tip 100 Baht ($3) for a 1000 Baht ride from the airport or even 20 Baht for a 200 Baht ride across town. You give too much!

Yes, the UBER website says it is ok, but the first few times I took one, they said no...and I have not tried again (just add it through the app). I did look it up at the time and apparently, some cities/states prohibited it. Maybe due to lobbying by the taxi companies.

When I took UBER in DC, it seemed the best way to make money was to be proactive and have a new rider lined up near the spot where you were dropping the person in your car. It was pretty impressive to watch as they were masters in squeezing though terrible traffic while lining up the next ride. I guess they were always looking for fares that took them to a target rich environment for the next ride.

Never having ubered in my life, I was all confused why we had so many Uber drivers comparing their ratings on a Porsche forum..

But it's a passenger rating ??
Why is that relevant, if you arrived at destination why would it matter? what rating you got , as long as you paid the driver, got where you want, and weren't kidnapped by Isis in the process ?

The passengers also rate the drivers.

Then Uber pairs you higher rated passengers with higher rated drivers. Also, the better your uber rating, the more likely you are to get the nearest/quickest availability when requesting in a busy area.

Denis can add additional insight, but I assume being on-time, polite, respectful of the driver's car will earn you high passenger ratings.

Having a low passenger rating means waiting lot longer for a ride, like maybe forever if it’s busy enough. A lot of drivers on the ride share forums say that they absolutely will not accept a ride if the rider has below a certain rating. No way, never. I try to avoid low rated people but I will sometimes chance it if it’s close. A lot of times, they’ve changed their ways and are no problem at all.

I like that part of Uber.

I feel like you either need to post here or start your own thread with "interesting" fares, whether that's really interesting, or crazy, or bad or ....

I'm unlikely to ever Uber, but I find the idea interesting, and the interaction and stories can be mundane to crazy.

This has been a very informative thread and I will give Uber a whirl: Will I get a lower rating because of my wooden shoes

A bit of an obscure reference (not to Denis): https://sparkfiles.net/sabotage/

Change is good.
